PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED MARTIN, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS.
CUT-OFF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 758,265, dated April26, 1904.
Application filed July 3, 1903. $eria1 No. 164,197. (No model.) V
T0 (LZZ whom, it nifty concern:
Be it known that I, .ALFRED MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Cut-Ofis, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct a cut-off in which the inner shield has its upper end hooked over the upper end of the vertical section of the cut-ofi' in order that an unbroken interior surface may be had.
The further object of this invention is to form the overflow-spout of the cut-off of a single piece conical in form, having its larger end connected to the vertical portion.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved cut-ofi in which the valve is turned into avertic'al position in order that the water may descend the vertical section. Fig. 2 is a similar section in which the valve is turned to discharge the water through the overflow-section. Fig. 3 is a face representation in which the overflow-section and valve are removed.
The cut-ofi is composed of a vertical section 1 and an overflow-section 2, joined together.- The vertical section has a side opening 3, over which the overflow-section is located. The overflow-section is conical in form for a purpose to appear hereinafter, the larger end being secured to the vertical section. .VVithin the vertical section is located a valve 4 of the usual form and having a pivotal connection therewith by the rod 5. section is located a shield 6, having its upper edge 7 turned outwardly over the upper-end of the vertical section and a portion 8 of its lower edge engaging the upper edge of the opening 3 in the vertical section, thereby holding the shield within the vertical section against lengthwise movement. The lower edge of this shield has the usual inturned flange 9, receiving one end of the valve 4, as shown at Fig. 2.
By extending the shield to the top of the Within thevertical' vertical. section a smooth interior surface is had and no chance for water to pass between it and the inner wall of the vertical section.
vBy making the overflow-section tapering in its lengthwise direction and the larger end secured to the vertical section suificient room is had to permit the valve to turn into a vertical position, as shown at Fig. 1. Also the joining of another length of pipe to the tapered section is made easy, and waste-pipes of different sizes may be connected therewith.
My improvements may be applied to other forms of sections than cylindrical without departingfrom the scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention l. A cut-0H comprising a sheet-metal vertical section having a side opening, an overflowsection connected to the vertical section and covering the opening, a valve pivoted within the vertical section and a sheet-metal shield located within the'vertical section having its upper end turned over the upper end of the vertical section.
2. A cut-01f comprising a sheet-metal vertical section having a side opening, an overflowsection connected with the vertical section and covering the opening, a valve pivoted within the vertical section and a sheet-metal shield located within the vertical section having its upper end turned over the upper end of the vertical section, and-a portion of its lower end embracing the wall of the opening.
3. A cut-ofl comprising a sheet-metal vertical section having a side opening, a sheetmetal overflow-section tapering in its lengthwise direction and having its larger end lo cated over the side opening and secured to the vertical section, and a valve pivoted within the vertical section and having a portion movable within the upper portion of the overflow-section.
I ALFRED MARTIN. Vlfitnesses:

E. BEHEL.
