PATENT OFFICE.
CYRUS ROBINSON, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO WESTINGHOUSE MACHINE COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
SPEED-GOVERNOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 758,020, dated April 19, 1904.
Original application filed June 28, 1900, Serial No. 22,004. No. 121,937-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CYRUS ROBINSON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in, Speed-Governors, of which the following is a specification, this ap' plication being a division of my application, Serial No. 22,004, filed June 28, 1900.
My invention relates to retarding devices which severally embody a cylinder, a piston, a piston-rod, and some fluid in the cylinder against which the piston acts and by which its movement is resisted and retarded.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of the character above indicated which shall be simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction and effective in operation and which shall be specially adapted for automatic adjustment to different degrees of movement of the mechanism or element to which it is attached.
My invention is primarily designed for use in connection with governors of steam-engines; but since it is not restricted to that specific use it is shown detached and will be described and claimed as of general application.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof, a portion of the piston-rod being broken away; and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on line II II of Fig. 1.
The cylinder 1 is provided with a removable head 2 at one end, having a screw-threaded socket 2 to receive a supporting screw-stud. Adjacent to the removable head 2 is a port 3, that opens into a by-pass 4:, which extends longitudinally through the side wall of the cylinder and has at its other end a port 5 opening into a valve-chamber 7 formed in the head 1 of the cylinder. The by-pass has also a smaller port 6, that opens into the cylinder at a point adjacent to the head 1. A passage 8 leads from the valve-chamber 7 to the interior of the cylinder, and this passage and the port 5 are normally closed by means of a valve 9,
which is normally held to its seat by means of Divided and this application filed September 3, 1902. Serial (No model.)
thumb-nut 15 to vary the effective size of the port. This valve is also provided with a lockwasher 16, having a handle 17 As the piston 18 is moved backward and forward in the cylinder by means of the piston-rod 19 it will obviously force the fluid through the by-pass in the one direction or the other in accordance with the direction of the movement of the piston.
In case this device is employed in connection with an engine-governor the port 6 will provide a sufficient opening for the passage of the fluid under all slight fluctuations in engine-speed on account of small changes in load; but if there are large changes in load and speed the liquid-pressure may become suflicient to raise the valve 9, and thus provide for a greater flow of fluid, and consequently a more rapid movement of the speedgovernor piston.
The details of construction may obviously be varied from what is shown and described without departing from my invention, and I therefore desire it to be understood that limitations are not to be imposed except by What is found in the prior art.
I claim as my invention 1. A speed-governor comprising a cylinder and a piston, and having a by-pass around the piston and two ports opening into the by-pass from the cylinder, said ports being respectively provided with an automatic valve and a non-automatic valve.
2. A speed-governor comprising a cylinder and a piston, and having a by-pass around the piston and two ports of unequal size opening into the cylinder, the larger port having an automatically-operating valve and the smaller port having a non-automatic valve.
4. A speed-governor comprising a-cylinder and a piston, and having a by-pass around the piston and two ports of unequal size, the larger port having an automatic valve and the smaller port having a non-automatic valve.
5. A speed-governor comprising a cylinder and a piston, and having a by-pass around the piston and two ports between the cylinder and the by-pass, one of said ports being provided with a manually-operated adjusting-valve and the other being provided with a spring-seated automatic valve.
6. A speed-governor comprising a cylinder and a piston, and having a by-pass around the piston and two ports of unequal size opening into the by-pass from one end of the cylinder, a spring-seated valve for the larger port and a manually-adjustable, non-automatic Valve for the smaller port.
7. A speed-governor comprising a cylinder and a piston, and having a by-pass around the piston and two ports of unequal size opening into the by-pass at one end of the cylinder, an
automatic valve for the larger port having an CYRUS ROBINSON.
