IMPROVED PROCESS 0F OILING, PBESERVING, AND STRENGTHENINGLEATHER.

T0 ALL WIIOM IT MAY OONCERN:
Bo itknown that I, LOUIS S. ROBBINS, of the city, county, and State of New York,A have invented a new and improved Process for'Oiling, Preserving, and Strengthening Leather and Skins.
In the manufacture of leather, after the skins have been properly tanned`they are saturated with various liquid oils in that part of the general process known as carrying. The oleaginous substances-are applied byV hand to the leather, whenit is both'wet and cold, so that :they do not penetrate and permeate the leather as speedily and thoroughly as is required The method -is slow, laborious, and hence expensive. Whether this part'of the operation be performed before or after the skns'have been shaved cin the leshside, theoil does not penetrato all parts of the skin alike, for the reason that the membranous structure is of unequal thickness and compactness. It'is impossible, therefore, to secure au equal diffusion of the oily substance bythe ordinary method -of its application.' New, therefore, to produce this equal distribution of such oleaginous substances as may be employed by the rtlanufacturer,,inv the mostthorough, rapid, and economical manner, asalso to preserve and strengthen the skins and leather, is the object of this invention, and the object is accomplished thereby.
'.lhe following is a .complete description of one form of apparatus, and of the method employed by me in the accomplishment of myobjcct, as declared above, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which constitute part ofl this specification.
A, in the drawing, represents u retort, made of any desired form o'r size, in which the'heavy'oil of coal, tar, resin, paralliuc oil, or other oleaginous substances or compounds are placed, and subjected to the action of heat from any suitable furnace. B represents the man-hole of the retort, used in cleansing the same, or in changing its contents. C, a pipe communicating with the retort A at er near its top, passingto andcominunieating with chambers or receptacle D. represents the discharge-pipe, employed `for removing the remaining contents after the operation is over. llcat being applied to the retort A, containing the heavy oil of tar, resin, paralline, 8tc., as described, oleagiuous vapors are generated therein, which pass out of the same through the connecting-pipe C, into the chambers D, where the skins are so arranged as te admit of their being permeated in the most effectual manner.- lhis treatmentlis continued until the skins or leather, of whatever nature or kind, are suliciently saturated, when the fire may be extinguished. Y
I do not confine myself to Aany particular form of apparatus, as there -are various ways by which the same can be accomplished by the,use of heat; but A What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I '.lhe process for saturating skins or leather with olcaginousvapors and compounds, before, after, anddnring the operation of carrying the same, substantially as herein described. v
l I also claim the application of the saine Vprocess or treatment to all such articles manufactured from leather as may require the use ot' oils, either to render them impervious to moisture, 0r to increase their flexibility,
. LOUIS S. ROBBINS.. Witnesses:
