FIG. 3.

PATENT OFFICE.
RAYMOND STEIDL, OF MATTOON, ILLINOIS.
BUCKET OR PAIL FASTENER- SPEGIFIOATION forming part of Letters P n No. 757,848, dated April 19, 1904.
Application filed November 12, 1903. Serial No. 180,877. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RAYMOND STEIDL, of Mattoon, county of Coles, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bucket or Pail Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and clear description thereof.
My invention relates to fasteners.
The improvement is more particularly adapted for the fastenings of buckets, pails, cans, and the like.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a pail to which my invention has been applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of half of the pail, showing my improved fastener when locked and securing the cover to the pail. Fig. 3 is a similar side elevation showing the cover of the pail in the act of being locked. Fig. 4 is also a similar View showing the fastener device unlocked.
My invention consists in the following construction and combination of parts, details of which will first be fully described and the pat entable features then set forth and claimed.
1 represents a bucket or pail adapted for any purpose provided with the ordinary cover 2 and the usual bail 3. For convenience of reference the bucket, pail, or other vessel will hereinafter be referred to as a pail, it being understood that similar-vessels are meant.
To the opposite sides of the pail l are secured ears 4:, to which is secured a yoke-shaped lever 5, preferably made of wire and formed with eyes 6. Within these eyes is secured a double-armed wire yoke-fastener 7 the upper end of which is formed with an L-shaped offset 8. The lower ends of the fastener 7 are pivoted in the eyes 6.
The fasteners upon both sides of the pail are preferably the same, and one only may therefore be described.
When the fastener is unlocked, it may be in a position of Fig. 4: or in a position of Fig. 3, with the lever 5 thrown to the side of the pail. When it is desired to lock the fasteners, the fastener 7 is raised up and the engaging offset 8 placed over the edge of the cover. By pressing the lever arm 5 downwardly against the sides of the pail the fastener 7, with its engaging hook or offset 8, is broughtinto close firm contact with the cover, thereby firmly locking it to the pail.
It will be understood that both fasteners are engaged and locked in the same way. The
. hooked ends of the fasteners may be united by a bail pivotally connected thereto.
The yoke 5 being formed of wire its oppoposite pintles are adapted to be readily sprung into and out of the ears 4, enabling the pails to be temporarily supplied, if desired, with fasteners when used for certain classes of goods. The yoke-fastener 7 being also of wire permits this flexure, owing to its own resiliency. By pressing the outer end of yoke 5 between the fingers of one hand the whole fastener, including the yoke-fastener 7, is instantly removed from the ears of the bucket.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A series of fasteners upon opposite sides of a pail or bucket, comprising in combination,
ears upon the opposite sides of the pail or bucket, having separate projections having bearings in axial line, a wire yoke, as 5, having outturned spring-pintlesfitting into the bearings in said projections and provided with intermediate eye-loops formed thereon, a second wire yoke, as 7, having outturned ends fitting into said eye-loops on the wire yoke 5, the free end of which yoke is bent over to form a hook. r In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
