Description

Patented Jan. 13, 1948 1" ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,434,328 BHOEMAKERS CLAMP Edward A. McLane, Elko, Nev. I Application October 5, 1945, Serial No. 620,445
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to clamps for cementing half-soles to shanks.
In the present day method of repairing shoes it is a customary practice to cut away the worn sole and cement a new half-sole to the shank which is skived for the overlapping new halfsole.
One of the objects of the invention is to produce a clamp to hold the cemented overlapping new half-sole and shank firmly in position until the cement is dry and the two parts are bound together.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clamp of the class described which can be constructed at little cost and is of simpler and more compact construction than that disclosed in prior devices.
With the foregoing and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention:
Figure 1 is a side in section.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the device.
Figure 4 is a transverse section of the device as applied in practice.
Like numerals in the description and drawings designate the same parts of construction.
The clamp consists of an upper plate I and a lower plate 2 of metal slightly bowed longitudinally, and of suitable dimensions for the purpose as hereinafter stated. The lower plate is beveled or inclined from front to rear on its under side, as at 3, in Figure 4, so that it will easily wedge under the skived shank 5 of a shoe.
Both ends of each clamp plate are curved, as at 1, to produce divergent arms when the plates are assembled and the arms on the upper plate are provided with vertical elongated holes 8 for the reception of elongated and threaded bolts 9.
The ends of the arms of the lower plate 2 are curled under to form shoulders l0.
Levers ll bifurcated at their inner ends are fulcrurned on pins or studs l2 which project laterally from the lower ends of bolts 9. Pivotally mounted on the bifurcated end of levers II are stirrups or hooks l3 with wide jaws adapted to engage shoulders I 0.
A compression spring I! is mounted between elevation of the device partly washers on each bolt 8 and is adjusted by a wing nut Hi. When the half-sole and shank are cemented and emplaced between the plates of the clamp. the stirrups or hooks I8 are engaged with shoulders ill in arm 7, After the work is thus positioned, the two levers are depressed until their pivotal connections with the stirrups or hooks pass above the fulcrum point of the levers and thus lock the two plates in firm engagement with the work.
The job can now be put aside until the cement has dried. In view 01 the fact that these clamps are inexpensive, a shoe repairman can aflord to provide himself with a suflicient number of them to take care of many such repair jobs. Not many are required for a shop 01' ordinary work capacity. Furthermore, these inexpensive clamps obviate the installation of an expensive bench device to do such work with slower progress.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A shoemaker's clamp consisting of an upper and a lower metal plate slightly curved longitudinally wherein both ends oi. each clamp plates are curved to form divergent arms when the plates are assembled, the upper plate arms being provided with vertical holes, and the lower plate arms are curled under to form a shoulder on each lower plate arm, a threaded bolt arranged slidably in each hole, a wing nut on each bolt above the upper arm, a helical spring surrounding each bolt between the upper arm and the corresponding nut, a pair of studs extending laterally from each bolt underneath the upper arm, a lever having a bifurcated inner end, pivotally mounted on each pair of studs, and a stirrup hook having a wide jaw pivotally mounted on the bifurcated end of each lever and adapted to engage the corresponding shoulder on the lower plate arm with the said jaw.
