PATENT OFFICE.
LORENZO D. PATTEN AND DAVID LIPPY, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNORS OF ONE-THIRD TO GEORGE MOREHOUSE, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
MECHANICAL TOY SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 757,834, dated April 19, 1904.
' Application sied August 12, 190s.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LORENZO D. PATTEN and DAVID LIPPY, citizens of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Toys; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a perspective View. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.
rIhe present invention has relation to mechanical toys; and it consistsin the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim. p
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents the body of a crocodileor alligator, which is formed of a size to produce a toy designed to be pulled by a string over a carpet or floor, the size having reference to a toy suitable for the class designed.
To the legs 2 of the body is attached the platform 3, which platform is formed of such a size as to give a pleasing appearance to the finished toy, and for the purpose of journaling the rear or crank axle 4 the platform 3 is provided with the downturned flanges 5 and upon which axle are attached the traveling wheels 6.
To the body 1 is pivotally attached the lower jaw 7 of the crocodile or alligator, which lower jaw is provided at its hinged end with the arm 8, to which arm is pivotally attached the front or forward end of the pitman 9, said pitman being journaled at its rear end to the crankaxle 4.
To the front or forward end of the platform 3 is attached the tongue 10, which tongue is preferably formed of bent wire and is provided Serial No. 169.241. (No model.)
with the loops or eyes 1l, which eyes carry the axle 12 of the front wheel 13.
For the purpose of preventing the tongue from springing the clip 14 is provided, which clip is preferably located directly in front of the forward traveling wheel 13.
For the purpose of producing a life-like appearance the top of the lower jaw 7 and the bottom of the upper jaw of the body are each provided with teeth 15.
It will be understoodthat as the toy proper is pulled or moved over any surface rotary motion will be imparted to the'crank-axle 4, which in turn imparts a reciprocating movement to the pitman 9, said reciprocating movement imparting a pivotal movement to the lower jaw 7, by which arrangement the crocodile or alligator, as the case may be, opens and closes its mouth, thereby giving a life-like appearance and one that will be amusing.
It will be understood that in order to carry out the above operation the platform 3 must be mounted upon traveling wheels; but as to the particular construction it forms no particular part of the present invention except that the axle imparting movement to the pitman must be cranked and the pitman connectdl to the pivoted jaw of the alligator or croco- By our peculiar arrangement it Will be no ticed that the crocodile or alligator has the appearance of -crouching upon the platform, thereby giving a more' life-like appearance to the toy proper, and as the mounted platform moves along the floor or carpet or other surface the mouth of the crocodile or alligator will open or close.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a mechanical toy, the combination of a platform provided with downturned axle-bearing flanges, a crank-axle journaled in the downturned flanges, a tongue connected to the forward end of the platform, and a traveling wheel carried by the tongue, a crocodile or alligator Aooly mounted on the platform, apvoted jaw have hereunto subscribed our names in the Connected to the body, a downward-extended presence of two Witnesses.
arm secured to the jaw at its hinged or pivoted 1 end, anda pitman connected to jaw-arm at one AMEN' end and its opposite end journaled to the ci-ankaxle, substantially as and for the purpose set Witnesses: forth. C. K. HERSHEY,
In testimony that We claim the above We WILLIAM F. VAEGELE, J1'.
