EXERCISING APPARATUS.

Be it known that LGEORGE Yonnenn, a citi- Zen ofthe United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exercising Apparatus, of vwhich the following is a speciication, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of this invention is to provide an improved exercising apparatus of the punching-bag class which may be secured to an upright wall or any suitable upright support in a hall, room, or other compartment and by means of which the vibration and noise occasioned by the use of apparatus of this class may be avoided; and with these and other objects in view the invention consi/sts in an apparatus of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Y Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of my improved apparatus in position for use, and Fig. 2 a side view of one part thereof and showing a modification.

In the practice of my invention I provide a l bracket-arm a, provided at one end with a securing-plate a2, having a collar a3, into which the bracket-arm a is screwed, and by means of the plate a2 the bracket-arm may be secured to a wall or other upright support as shown in Fig. 1. The outer end of the bracket-arm a, is provided with a depending tubular member which is connected therewith by an elbow-coupling a5 in the usual manner, or said connection may be made in any preferred way, or the bracket-arm a and the depending tubular member a* may be formed integrally, if desired.

Connected with the lower end of the depending tubular member is a cup-shaped buffer '0, and in the form of construction shown the buer ois connected with the tubular member of by means of a screw-threaded collar which is screwed onto said member and provided with a bottom flange or rim CZE, to which the y cup-shaped buffer c is bolted or otherwise secured, as shown at e, and in the form of construction shown the buler c is provided with a central opening at c2, which corresponds with the central' bore of theY tubular member e4, and that part or' the buffer which adjoins said tubular member is beveled 0r rounded, as shown at o3.

Suspended centrally beneath the buffer c is an ordinary punching-bag f, and the suspension of said bag in the form of construction shown is made by means of cord or similar flexible device f 2, which passes upithrough the opening in the butler c and partially through the tubular member a* of the bracketarm a. and the end of which is passed out through an opening f3 in the side of said tubular member and tied into a knot f4. As thus suspended it will be seen that the punching-bag f is free to swing in all directions, and when struck by the list in the usual manner the bag will ily up, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, and will strike the concave surface of the cupshaped buffer c and will swing back into the position shown in full lines, and by reason of this method of supporting the bag there is no noiseproduced by the operation of the apparatus.

It is a well-known fact that in the operation of apparatus of this class as usually constructed .and supported thereis a constant vibration, jolt, or jar, which is transmitted to a greater or less extent through the building in which the apparatus is placed; but by means of my improvement this objectionable feature is obviated, the jolt, jar, or vibration being reduced to a minimum, if not entirely prevented.

In Fig. 2 of the drawings I have shown a slight modification, in which instead of the cup-shapedbuifer c I substitutea similarlyshaped buffer g, which consists of wire bent into the form of a spiral and one end of which is connected with the depending tubular member a* and the other with the collar d; but this buffer may be made in still other forms and of other material without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacricing its advantages.

My invention is not limited to the use of the horizontal arm co for supporting the buier c, and any other suitable form of bracket may be employed having a depending portion with which the buifer c may be connected.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

An exercising apparatus of the class described, comprising a bracket-arm adapted at one end to be secured to a wall or other support and provided at its opposite end with a depending tubular member, a cup shaped buier secured to the lower end of said depending tubular member, and a punching-bag GEORGE YOERGER.
