.JAR-.FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 757,683, dated April 19, 1904.
Application filed December 4, 1903. Serial No. 183,799. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.:v
Be it known that l, SAMUEL Am. Ronan, a
citizen of the United States, residing at New has for its object the provision of afastener which is simple, holds the lid securely in place, and permits jars to which it is applied to be compactly packed for purposes of ship- Ynient, display, &c.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation showing the upper part of a jar and its lid with my improved fastener applied thereto, the jar and lid being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a top plan view vof 'the jar, lid, and fastener shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective vie-W of my improved fastener.
Referring to the drawings, a lid L is secured in place upon a jar .l by a fastener F, which engages With the lid, and a spring-bail B secured to the jar.
K rlhe upper portion of the jar is provided with a countersunk seat l for the lid, and between the lid, and the seat may be placed a Washer 2, of rubbenor other suitable material, to make a tight joint. The fastener F comprises a standard. having a base 4, adapted to engage with the lid and preferably provided With a circular extension 5,A adapted to enter a socket in the lid to hold the fastener in place, and two upright pieces 6 and 7 xed to the base and having notches 8 and 9 at their tops. A cam 10, pivoted to the standard at a point 11 at one side of the center line, engages the bail at 12 and may be secured thereto, as shown.
The function of the camis to lift the bail into and out of engagement With the tops of the uprights 6 and 7, and thereby secure and release the lid. kThe notches 8 and 9. aid in maintaining the bail in position upon the top of the standard.
rlhe fastener being in released position the parts Will occupy positionsas shown by the dotted lines of Fig. 1, and the lid may easily be removed. The bail can be lifted from this position intothe notches at the top of the standard Vby pressure applied to a part 13 of the cam, and it will then bear upon the standard, and thereby hold the lid tightly against its seat. In moving from its released to its secured position, or vice versa, the bail passes the pivotal point of the cam. It therefore draws against the standard When in the secured position and in moving from that position is quickly moved to release the parts on passing the pivotal point. It may be locked in the secured position by a piece of Wire or other suitable body 14, Fig. l, inserted in a hole 15, Fig. 3, in the cani 1() and engaging' with notches 16 in the standard. The sides of the notches 8 and 9 may be made higherl may after the locking device has been removed be released by upward pressure on the part 13 of the cam 10. A y
Having thus described my invention, What AI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination with a jar and a. lid
therefor, of a :bail secured to said jar and a fastener comprisinga standard bearing upon said lid and means supported upon said standard for bringing said standard and bail into contact, substantially as described.
y 2.v The combination with a jar and a lid therefor, of a bail secured to said jar and a fastener comprising a standard bearing upon said lid and a cam supported on said standard for bringing said standard and bail into contact, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a jar and a lid therefor, of a bail'secured to said jar and a fas tener comprisinga standard bearing upon said lid and a cam pivoted to said standard, for bringing said standard and bail into contact, substantially as described. n
4. The combination With a jar and a lid therefor, of a bail secured to said jar and a fastener comprising a standard bearing upon said lid and a cam pivoted to said standard and engaging with said bail for moving said bail into contact with the top of said standard, substantially as described.
The combination with a jar and a lid therefor, of a bail secured to said jar and a fastener comprising a standard bearing upon said lid and a cam pivoted to said standard at one side of the center line and engaging With said bail for moving said bail into contact' with the top of said standard, substantially as described.
6. The combination with a jar and a lid therefor, of a bail secured to said jar and a fastener comprising a standard bearing upon said lid and having a notch at its top and a cam pivoted to said standard and engaging with said bail for moving' said bail, into and out of said notch, substantially as described.
7. The combination with a jar and a lid therefor, of a bail secured to said jar and a fas'- tener comprising a standard bearing upon said lid and having a notch at its top, said notch having one side higher than the other and a cam pivoted to said standard at one side of the center line and engaging with said bail for moving said bail into and out of said notch, substantially as described.
8. The combination With a jar and a lid therefor, of a bail secured to said jar and a fastener comprising a standard bearing upon said lid and having a notch at its top, said notch having one sidehigher than the other, and a cam pivoted to said standard and engaging with said bail for moving said bail into and out of said notch, substantially as described.
9. The combination With a jar and a lid therefor, said lid having a socket, of a bail secured to said jar and a fastener comprising a standard bearing upon said lid and having an extension projecting into the socket and a cam pivoted to said standard and engaging with said bail to move it into contact with the top of said standard, substantially as described.
10. The combination with a jar and a lid therefor,of a standard bearing against said lid, said standard comprising a base and tWo uprights having notches at their top, one side of said notches being higher than the other, a spring-bail, and a cam pivoted between said uprights at a point removed from the center line and engaging said bail to lift it into and out of said notches, substantially as described.
1l. The combination with a jar and a lid therefor, of a standard bearing upon said lid, a bail secured to said jar, a cam pivoted to said standard and engaging with said bail for moving said bail into spring-pressed engagement with the top of said standard, and means-for locking the bail in its position against the standard, substantially as described.
12. The combination with a jar and a lid therefor, of a bail secured to said jar and a fastener comprising a standard having notches for receiving a loclingbody, bearing upon said lid, a cam having a hole for receiving a locl ing-body pivoted to said standard and engaging with said bail for moving said bail into spring-pressed engagement with t-he top of said standard, and a body inserted in the hole in said cam and engaging With the notches in said standard to lock the bail against the top of the standard, substantially as described.
13. A jar-fastener comprising a standard adapted to rest upon a lid and engage a bail and means secured to said standard for moving a bail into and out of contact with said standard, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
