PATENT OFFICE.
SUPPORT FORV SLATES OR TILES ON ROOFS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 757,285, dated April 12, 1904.
l Application led Gotober 2l, 1903. Serial No. 177,909. (No model.)
.To all whom t Wtay concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL DUCHEMIN, engineer, of Thury-Harcourt, Calvados, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for Slates or Tiles on Roofs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to supports for carrying square tiles or slates used for roofing buildings; and the objects of my improvements are, rst, to prevent the possibility of the tiles or slates shifting from their position, and. second, to enable slates to be placed and xed in position easily, quickly, and economically.
I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front view of one of the supports or carriers. Fig. 2 is a similar back view. Fig. 3 is a side view. Fig. 4. is a front `view showing the supports applied to roofing.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the different figures.
The improved support for the slates or tiles 1 consists of a vertical wire or strip f, provided atl its lower part with two arms a and b, Fig. 1, between which the lowest point of the slate is held. These two arms a b are connected by the bent bridge or junction-piece c, and the whole of the support is Vformed of a single strip or wire, the upper end of whichml, forms the spring part which hooks over the batteri of the roof, Fig. 3, while the lower end forms the two arms a b and the connecting-piece c, bent from the single piece through the points e a c I) e, the end of which may abut against the main part f of the support, as shown, or they may be fastened together in any suitable way. For example, the whole may be in one piece, `castor stamped, or the end may be soldered to the said main part f or may be united to the latter by binding them together with fine wire, or the end may be twisted round the main part f of the hook at any part of the latter. To increase or diminish the overlap ofthe slates on each other, as may be desired, it is suiicient to diminish or increase the space between the battens g, Figs. 4 and 5.
The'shape of the junction-piece or bridge c may be varied, and it may be made convex, concave, or straight. The hook may be provided with a point to be driven into the batten g instead of the spring d, so as to form the method of fixing known as passe-chevron.
The lower point of the slate is held by three points of support and so as not to be liable to be shaken or become displaced. These three points of support are formed by two arms a; connected by a bridge-piece c in the manner described, so that the slipping of the slate from its position in the support is absolutely prevented.
The shape, dimensions, details, and materials used may be varied as desired, and the improved supports may be applied to roofcoverings of slates, tiles, zinc, and the like, and are very simply, easily, and economically fitted and fixed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A support for square tiles or slates, consisting of three pointsl of support for the lower point of the tile or slate, formed by a bent wire or strip, and having a vertical part, the upper part of which forms a spring-hook, embracing the batten of the roof, its lower end bent down laterally to form one of the supporting-arms I), then bent across the front to form the bridge-piece c, and finally bent up laterally to form the other supporting-arm a, its end meeting the vertical part f, substantially as set forth and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of October, 1903.
Witnesses:
VICTOR HATRAU, EDMOND LEcoU'rURu..
