PATENT OFFICE.
HALF TO W. T. WALLACE, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
ELEVATOR-OPERATING MECHANISM.
SiEGIFIGATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 757,181, dated. April 12, 1904.
e Application filed may 16,1903. Serial No. 157,406 (No model.)
To (LZZ whom/it may concern:
Be it known'that I, MICHAEL J. DALY, a citizen of the United States, residing at' Pitts burg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Elevator-Operating Mechanism, of which improvement the following is a 'tially or wholly open the operating-lever in the car is lockedin'its inoperative position,. thus preventing the starting of the car until said door has been fully closed, thus preventing accidents.
In describing the invention .in detail refer ence is had to the accompanying drawings,
1 he reference-numeralrli dicates I "therein 'in. the usual manner, and the door 3, which is slidably mounted at the point where passagetoand from the elevator is desired, has a strip or operating-cam 4 mounted there-i One end of this" .Fig. 4. is an elevation of the same.
forming a part of this specification, wherein like referencemumerals" indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of an elevatorcar looking toward the door leading to the same, my device being applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same.
Fig.
3 is a detail plan view, partly in section, show-- ing the locking device on an enlarged scale. 1 Fig. 5 is a detall of my safety door-lock,
vator car, and 2 the operating-lever mounted on at a suitable elevation. strip 4 has a beveled end 5, which is adapted to engage a locking device carried by the car 1 when-the door 3 is opened. 'This locking device carried by the car consists of an L-' shaped member 6, the vertical leg. of which is pivotally secured within thevwall 7 of the car, and the other -leg' yof the said member has a the elenotch or slot 8 formed therein,'which may engage a lug 9, formed on the operating-lever 2, when the same is in its central or stationary position. Mounted on the vertical leg of the member 6 is a projection 10, in which the antifriction-ball 11 is loosely held, said ball and bracket extending considerably beyond the outside edge of the car and to such a position that the ball may be engaged by the strip when the door is open. I I The operation of the device is as follows; The elevator-car having been brought to a desired point opposite a door 3, the operator 'open's said door, thereby causing the beveled end 5 of the strip 4 to engage the ball 11 in the bracket 10, and thus force the member 6 of the locking device to a position such as that shown by dotted lines 'in Fig. 3. Theslot 8 in .the member 6 will then be engaging the lug 9, formed on the operating-lever2, and movement of the same will be prevented. until such time as the door is closed, when the strip 1 4 will be disengaged from the ball 11 and the member 6 will drop back, and the operatinglever may then again be operated.
I also provide 'a door-lock, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. In this view is shown a lever 13,
pivoted at 14: and provided with a cam end 12 and stop end 15'. It will be plain that when the door is shut it will be held closed until the lever 2 is brought to the middle position when the car is at that floor. A spring 16 is further provided to force the lever end 15 in 'behind the door when the same is closed. It
is thus seen that the door is positively and securely closed when the elevator is not in a safeposition for it to be opened.
While I have described my invention in detail, it is obvious that various slight changes ,.may be made in the same without departing flOJD the general spirit of the invention,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters f'ffll- In a device of the character described,
the combination wit-ha controlling-lever, of a leverfulcrumed on a door-track, a campro- I vided on one end of the said lever and lying In the path of the controlling-lever, and said fulcrumed lever having an enlarged end normally lying behind the door andlookingthe same from opening.
2-. ha device of the character described, the combination With a controlling-lever'having a lug on one side thereof, of an L-shaped lever, said lever being arranged in an aperture in the car-Wall and pivoted at its one end therein, the vertical leg thereof normally lying entirely Within the Wall of said car, the horizontalleg of said L-shaped lever projecting Within the car and having a notch formed'in its edge adapted to be engaged by said lug on said controlling-lever, a'projection centrally mounted 1 on said vertical leg opposite said 5 horizontal leg, the end of said projection being provided with an integral cup, an a'ntifrictionball loosely held in said cup, and a'carn-track on the elevator-door adapted to engage said ball, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereofl have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
MICHAEL J DALY.
