Be it known'that I, MICHAEL J. DALY, a citizen of the United States, residing at' Pitts burg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Elevator-Operating Mechanism, of which improvement the following is a 'tially or wholly open the operating-lever in the car is lockedin'its inoperative position,. thus preventing the starting of the car until said door has been fully closed, thus preventing accidents.

'This locking device carried by the car consists of an L-' shaped member 6, the vertical leg. of which is pivotally secured within thevwall 7 of the car, and the other -leg' yof the said member has a the elenotch or slot 8 formed therein,'which may engage a lug 9, formed on the operating-lever 2, when the same is in its central or stationary position. Mounted on the vertical leg of the member 6 is a projection 10, in which the antifriction-ball 11 is loosely held, said ball and bracket extending considerably beyond the outside edge of the car and to such a position that the ball may be engaged by the strip when the door is open. I I The operation of the device is as follows; The elevator-car having been brought to a desired point opposite a door 3, the operator 'open's said door, thereby causing the beveled end 5 of the strip 4 to engage the ball 11 in the bracket 10, and thus force the member 6 of the locking device to a position such as that shown by dotted lines 'in Fig. 3. Theslot 8 in .the member 6 will then be engaging the lug 9, formed on the operating-lever2, and movement of the same will be prevented. until such time as the door is closed, when the strip 1 4 will be disengaged from the ball 11 and the member 6 will drop back, and the operatinglever may then again be operated.
I also provide 'a door-lock, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. In this view is shown a lever 13,
pivoted at 14: and provided with a cam end 12 and stop end 15'. It will be plain that when the door is shut it will be held closed until the lever 2 is brought to the middle position when the car is at that floor. A spring 16 is further provided to force the lever end 15 in 'behind the door when the same is closed. It
is thus seen that the door is positively and securely closed when the elevator is not in a safeposition for it to be opened.
While I have described my invention in detail, it is obvious that various slight changes ,.may be made in the same without departing flOJD the general spirit of the invention,
