To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHANNES KRoNE, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of 56 Bismarckstrasse, Essen-on-the-Ruhr, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pivot-Guns, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in serving-steps for pivot-guns--that is to say, guns in which the trunnions of the gun-barrel or of the cradle are mounted in a fork or the like, which is in turn rotatably steps have heretofore been rigidly connected with the trunnion-ork, and therefore took part in the movement of the gun on tiring, and thus rendered the serving of the gun difcult for the crew standing on the servingstep. A
I attain the object of my invention by constructing the gun substantially as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of a part of a gun embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents one-half of a horizontal section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a' vertical section, on a larger scale, of the rotating bearing for the serving-step; and Fig. 4 is a modification of said bearing.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3, the construction of the gun-mount vcomprising pivot G and pivot-head A is well understood and needs no vto 3 specific description. Mounted on the outer face of the pivot-head A, concentric with the pivot G, are an upper and alower ring a', which serve as ways for the larger ring B, rotatable around the pivot-head. The ring B is number of rollers b', which are journaled in Serial No. 188,678. (No model.)

The position of ring C relative to the upper rollers is maintained by means of the set-screws d, which are mounted in a ring D of rectangular crosssection,rigidly connected with the pivot-head. The rotatable ring B has two arms E, which carry the servingstep F.
In order to impart horizontal rotary movement from the gun to the serving-step, I provide a carrier g, connected with the trunnionfork, the free end of which carrier extends downwardly into a slot e', formed in one of the arms E and extending in the direction of recoil.
The mode of operation of my invention is as follows: When the gun is trained by rotation on its vertical pivot, the carrier g eects at the vsame time the rotation of the servingstep around the pivot-head. The movement of the trunnion-fork, however, when the gun is fired is not imparted to the serving-step, be-
cause of the special arrangement of the same and because the carrier can move in the direction of recoil in the slot. The crew therefore is not hindered in the serving of the gun.
In the modication shown in Fig. 4 balls are used instead of rollers in the bearing of the serving-step. The balls J run in grooves in the guide-rings H and in the reinforcements of the rotatable ring B', which supports the serving-step. The position of the upper guide is secured in a way similar to that used in the roller construction by means of set-screws (Z. The arrangement of the serving-step and the carrier corresponds exactly to thatdescribed with reference to Figs. 1
Having thus described the invention, the followingy is what is claimed as new therein:
1. In combination with a pivot-gun and its yrnount, a serving-step rotatably supported on e said mount independently of the gun-pivot. provided at its upper and lower edges with a 2.x1ncombination with a pivot-gun mount havinga pivot-head upon which the gun rotrates, a serving-step rotatably mounted the pivot head independently of the pivot. 3. In combination with a pivot-gun mount having a pivot-head upon lwhich the gun rotates; a serving-step rotatably mounted upon the pivot head independently of the gunpivot and means causing the serx'ingstep to rotate with the gun in the horizontal traverse of the gun.
4. In a pivot-gun, the combination of the gun having a pivot7 the mount having a pivothead receiving the gun-pivot, a .serving-step having rotary support on said mount, concentric with, but independent of the gunpivot, and means for transmitting the horizontal traverse lmovement of the gun to the serving-step.
