To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that LWALDo CONARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at lNillcockson,

in the county of Newton and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to preclude the reuse of a bottle, jar, jug, or like package after the seal has once been broken and the contents of the package removed without the fact being made known to the average person, thereby protecting the consumer -as well as the proprietor putting up a special brand of goods.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.

While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferredembodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a vertical central section of a bottle embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of the seal as seen from the lower side and preliminary to bending the terminal portions of the securing-tabs. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the neck portion of the package stripped of the securing means. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the bottom-closure of the package.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The numeral 1 designates a bottle or analogous-necked receptacle or package constructed for cooperation with the closing means forming the essential part of the invention. The package 1 may be of any size or design, and its neck is provided at one side near its upper end with a projecting lip 2, around and under which the securing-tabs of the seal are bent. The opening through the neck flares at its upper or outer end, and a notch 3 is provided in the end of the neck at a point diametrically or package over which it extends.

An-opening 6 is formed in the bottom of the bottle or package and is adapted to be closed by a projection 7 of the plate 8, fitted to the lower side of the bottom and constituting a bottom-closure. An annular tongue-and-groove joint 9 is formed between the bottom of the bottle and the bottomclosure to assist in fixing the position of said bottom-closure, as well as to prevent leakage. A gasket or packing 10, of rubber or other suitable material, is interposed between the bottom of "the bottle and the bottom-closure to insure the formation of a tight joint and preclude wasting of the liquid contents of the package.

The seal 11 is of metal and may be formed of either tin or aluminium and is of a size to insure protection of the upper end of the bottle The seal is provided near one edge with an opening 12 to receive one end of the binder 5,and a pair of securing-tabs 13 project from the edge diametrically opposite to the opening 12 and are of a length to be bent around and .under the projecting lip 2. These securing-tabs are scored or otherwise weakened upon their under sides, as shown at 14:, to facilitate bending of the same around the upper and lower corners of the projecting lip 2 and to insure breaking of the tabs when endeavoring to straighten the same after having once been bent. The securing-tabs may be weakened at the points 14: in any determinate way, so as to insure the attainment of the desired object, the vital feature of which is the destruction of the tabs when straightening the same, thereby preventing the rense of the seal and necessitating the substitution of a new one. The seal may be suitably inscribed or impressed with a trade-mark or other matter, so as to throw a further safeguard about the invention and prevent the use of a plain piece of metal.

The binder 5 consists of wire of suitable gage and is of a length to embrace the bottom and sides of the bottle or package, substantially as shown in Fig. 1. One end of the binder is bent to provide an eye 4, which is looped around the edge portion of the seal ex terior to the opening 12. The opposite end of the binder is bent to provide a hook 15 to engage over the edge portion of the neck adjacent to the projecting lip 2. After the binder has been properly placed in position the securing-tabs 13 are bent around and under the projecting lip 2, thereby preventing lateral displacement of the binder, the hooked end 15 of which is confined between the securing-tabs 13, which extend along opposite sides thereof. It is the intention to have the binder of a length to snugly embrace the bottom and sides of the bottle or package and to confine the seal 11 and the bottom-closure.

However, to allow for variations of construction it has been found necessary to provide the side members of the binder with a tension device, as indicated at 16, the same being located near the upper end of the binder, so as to come opposite to the neck portion of the bottle or package and be out of the way. Any form of tension device may employed, and,as shown, the same consists of a turnbuckle having swivel connection with one section of the binder and screw-thread connection with the other section. After the parts have been properly positioned the binder may be tightened by operating the tension device in the well-known manner.

To fill the bottle or package, the bottomclosure is placed in position and the package filled in the usual way, after which the cork or stopper 17 is pressed into the neck. The binder with the seal attached thereto is next placed inposition by engaging the hook 15 over the projecting lip portion 2 of the neck and passing the binder around the package and the seal over the end of the neck, with the securing-tabs extending upon opposite sides of the hook 15, said tabs being bent so as to engage over and under the lip 2. To open the package, the seal is broken by straightening the securing-tabs 13, which crack or break along the lines 14:, thereby precluding further use of the seal. After the securing-tabs have been straightened or loosened the seal and binder are removed and the cork 17 extracted, thereby permitting the liquid contents to be drawn off in the usual way. The seal 11 having been mutilated or destroyed in the opening process prevents the reuse of the bottle or package without rendering detection pos- Y sible, as will be readily comprehended.

Since the binder 5 secures both the seal 11 and the closure 8 to the bottle, breakage of the seal throwsthe binder from the closure 8,

so that without replacing the seal it would be impossible to secure the element 8 again to the bottle-body. If the closure 8 were not provided, it will be readily seen that as soon as the seal 11 is broken the receptacle might be reused very readily, since the bottle-body would be intact and of ordinary form adapted to contain any goods which might be placed therein. Since the binder is peculiarly constructed in its adaptation in holding the closure 8 and seal 11 in proper position, a structure of receptacle is provided which could not be refilled for fraudulent purposes.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1 In combination with a bottle or package having a projecting portion, a binder for embracing the bottle, and a seal for securing the said binder and comprising a portion adapted to be bent around said projecting portion of the bottle, the bendable portion being scored or weakened at determinate points to prevent straightening thereof after being bent without producing fracture, substantially as described.

2. The combination of a bottle or like package having a projecting lip portion, a binder for embracing the bottom and sides of the bottle and having an end portion constructed to engage over the aforesaid projecting lip, and a seal loosely connectedwith the opposite. end portion of the binder and having securing-tabs to extend along opposite sides of the bent end of the binder and bent around the said projecting lip to secure the parts, substantially as described. I

3. The combination of a bottle or like package having a projecting lip at the upper end of its neck and having an opening in its bottom, a bottom-closure, a seal adapted to extend over the neck of the bottle and having securing-tabs provided with weakened portions, and a binder having one end loosely secured to an edge portion of the seal and having its opposite end portion bent to engage over the aforesaid projected lip and to come between the securing-tabs and seal, which tabs are bent over and under said projected lip, substantially as specified.
