JOHN S. HENSON, OF ZANESFIELD, OHIO.
CAR-COUPLING- SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 756,855, dated A il 12, 1904, Application filed December 31, 1902. Serial No. 137,334. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN S. HENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Zanesfield, in the county of Logan and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
' My invention relates to improvements in car-couplings of that class or style known as the Janney type, using a'knuckle-opener and lock; and the object is to simplify and improve the existing art by providing a coupling of improved simplified construction, wherein a locking-pin and knuckle-opener of particular construction is employed to swing the knuckle open and also when seated to lock the knuckle in fixed position.
WVith this object in view the invention consists in the novel construction of parts and their assemblage or aggroupment in operative combination, as will be hereinafter fully specified, and the novelty thereof particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed.
I have fully and clearly illustrated the invention in the accompanying drawings, to be taken as apart of this specification, and wherem Figure 1 is a perspective view of the end portion of a car equipped with a coupling constructed in accordance with the invention and means on the car for operating the knuckleopener. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section through the coupling-head of the drawbar and front elevation of the block or pin which opens and locks the knuckle. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the knuckle. Fig. L is a view in horizontal section through the draw-head and transverse section through the opener and locking-pin and the joint-pin of the knuckle, also showing the knuckle and rearwardly extending arm which engages with the locking-pin. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the locking pin or block, showing the camway and locking recess or seat. Fig. 6 is a vertical longitudinal section through the draw-head, vertical section through the locking-pin, and side elevation of the knuckle.
In the drawings similar reference notations designate like parts appearing in the several illustrations.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the draw-b ar, and B the draw-head thereof formed on the outer end and having the usual coupling-cars at one side and end recess substantially as shown, all made to conform to established lines of conformation.
O designates the coupling-jaw pivotally connected to the draw-head in the usual manner by a pin 1 and formed with upper and lower jaw extensions 2 3, formed with a couplinglink slot between them and pin-holes in their ends to be utilized under well-known circumstances. Rearwardly from the hinge or knuckle of the jaws extends an arm 4:, tapering from its base and terminating in an extension 5, tapering in cross-section and having a rounded end 5, designed to ride on the face of the cam in the locking-pin. This extension lodges in a locking seat or recess in the opener and locking-pin, hereinafter described. The joint-pin 1 is passed through the base of the arm 4. In the forward part of the draw-head to one side is formed a square vertical socket 6, opening from the under side of the draw-head and extending the required distance into the draw-head, as shown, and in the metal left standing and closing the upper end of the socket is made an aperture 7, through which a lifting-chain passes. In the front wall of the socket 6 is formed a transverse opening 8, extending the width of the socket and through which the arm' 4 extends and is afforded room to vibrate. In the socket 6 is slidinglydisposed the opener and locking pin or block 9, formed with a locking-shoulder 10 in a recess behind which the end 5 of the arm 4 seats when the jaw is in locked position. From the locking-recess leads a camway or track 11, so that when the block is raised the end 5 of the arm will travel on the cam and be swung to open the jaw. The back or opposite side of the shoulder has a cam-face 10, which'serves to lift the pin by contact of the end 5 when the jaw is closed, as in the act of coupling. This lift of the pin permits automatic coupling without manipulation of the pin. To the top end of the block 9 is fixed a staple or ring 12, to which is fastened the end of a chain 13, the other end of which is connected to a lever or lifting arm 14, extending from a rock bar or shaft 15, journaled in convenient position across the end of the car, as indicated in the drawings,v and provided with suitable handles 16 to operate the shaft. It will be perceived that the device may be operated from the side of the car and the necessity of going between the car to make the coupling or to effect uncoupling is obviated.
The functions of the parts have been specified in the description; but the operation of coupling and uncoupling may be collated as follows: The coupling may be accomplished automatically, because when pressure is applied to the coupling-jaw it will eventuate in swinging the arm L back into locked position, so that when it is desired to uncouple all that is necessary to do is to lift the block 9, when the camway 11 turns the arm 4 to swing the jaw out and free from an engaging jaw on the other car.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is-- In a car-coupling, in combination; a drawhead having a vertical angular socket therein and a transverse opening in the front wall of the socket, a coupling-jaw pivoted to the drawhead and having a rearwardly-extending tapered arm the end of which projects through said opening, and a vertically-movable locking-pin fitting said socket, having a lockingshoulder behind which the end of the arm is looked, a cam-face in front of said shoulder to lift the pin automatically when the jaw is closed, and a cam-track below the shoulder to swing the arm to open the jaw.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN S. HENSON.
