To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CARL F. SKOOG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Sewing Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in a device to be used by seamstresses, dressmakers, and others who perform needle-work; and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement, and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically.

The object of the invention is to embody in a singleimplement of asimple, attractive, convenient, and inexpensive form a number of devices useful in sewingsuch as a spool-rack, work holder, pincushion, scissors holder, work-box, and darning-ball-which implements may be readily attached to a table or other suitable support.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, partly in section, of a sewing device embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a front view in elevation thereof.

Like numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the different views of the drawings.

The reference-numeral 5 represents the supporting-standard, which may be made of any suitable size and material, but preferably of metal, and has its lower portion formed with a rectangular base or bracket 6 to receive a portion of the top 7 of a table or sewing-machine. As shown in the drawings, the lower portion of the base or bracket 6 is provided with an inward extension 8, in which is located a set-screw 9, used for securing the device to the table. The head 10 of the screw 9 is preferably provided on its upper surface with a piece of felt 11 to prevent it marring or scratching the table-top 7 or support for the device. The inner surface of the bracket 6 is also provided with felt or cushioning material 11 for a like purpose. The upper portion of the bracket6 is formed or provided with a horizontal plate 12, which extends on either side of the bracket 6 and is provided on its upper surface with one or more pins 13 to fit in the openings of spools 14:, thereby forming a spool-rack. The supporting-standard 5 is provided near its middle with a forwardly and upwardly extending arm 15, which has on its free end a horizontally-extending and toothed or serrated jaw 16 of any suitable size and shape, but preferably rectangular, as shown. Fulcrumed on the standard 5 at a suitable distance above the arm 15 is a lever 17, the lower armof which is provided with a serrated jaw 18 to engage the jaw 16 on the arm of the supporting-standard. Secured at one of its ends to the standard 5 is a spring 19, the other end of which rests against the inner surface of the upper arm of the lever 17 and serves to normally hold the jaw 18 in engagement with the jaw 16 on the said arm. The upper end of the standard 5 is reduced to form a screw 20, which fits in a suitable socket 21 in the lower portion of the work-box 22, which is made of two semispherical portions 23 and 24:, the former of which is hollow to receive and hold thimbles, buttons, hooks and eyes, papers of needles, and the like, and the latter is preferably made of cushioning material to form a pincushion. The two sections 23 and 24 forming the work-box are secured together at their meeting edges by means of a hinge 25 and may be fastened by means of a catch 26 of any suitable kind located on the opposite portion of the box from that on which the hinge is secured. Located around the upper end or screw portion 20 of the standard is a washer 27, which is provided with a hook 28, on which a pair of scissors 29 or other article may be hung.

From the foregoing and by reference to the drawings it will be seen and clearly understood that by securing the device to the top of a table, as shown in the drawings, the pins or projections 13 will serve to hold spools in a convenient position, so that the thread may be unwound therefrom when desired, and that by pressing the upper arm of the lever 17 toward the standard the jaw 18 will be raised, so that the garment or needle-work may be placed between said jaws 16 and 18, when by removing the pressure from the lever 17 the work will be clamped and firmly held at about the proper height for sewing or embroidering, thus avoiding the necessity of the operator or sewer leaning over, as usual when the Work is fastened to the knee. It is evident that the hook 28 may be used'for supporting the scissors, strands of thread, such as silk floss, or other articles and that when desired the work-box 22 may be detached by unscrewing it from the standard, when it may be used as a darning-ball, and for this purpose the lower section 23 of the box is preferably made of hard and polished material.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As an improved article of manufacture, a combination sewing device consisting of a supporting-standard having means at its lower end to secure it to a table, and provided at its upper end with a reduced screw-threaded portion, a washer located around the reduced portion of the standard and having a depending hook, and a box secured on the reduced portion of the standard,substantially as described.
