SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 756,634, dated April 5, 1904.

Beit known that I, GEORGE IRA HERRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wheaton, in the county of Dupage and State ofIllinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tape-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to tape-holders, and more especially to those holders adapted for use with a surveyors tape.

The object of the present invention is to provide a convenient, simple, and useful tapeholder by means of which the tape may be quickly reeled in and which is so constructed .as to have all of its parts easily accessible.

The structure of the device will appear more particularly in the following description upon reference to the accompanying ,drawings.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a top plan view of the holder. Fig. 2 is a central section of the device. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 is the ordinary outer casing of a tapeholder forming the outer rim and rear face of thepresent holder-casing. Within this casing fits the casing 2, which forms between its rear face and the rear face of the casing 1 a tape-receiving compartment 4. This casing has its front face cut away and is removably secured to the casing l by means of screws 6'.

Upon the casing 2 on the interior wall of its side face are formed teeth or cogs 8, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the purpose of which will appear.

Extending through the opening in face 5 of the casing'2 is a hollow hub or shaft 9, which engages the projection 9 ofthe casing 1 and is provided with a plate 10, integral therewith, which forms a portion of the front face of the casing 2, lying in the same plane therewith. Between this plate and the front face of the casing 2 there is formed the slot 11, extending around the casing, as seen in Fig. 1. Upon the outer face of this plate 10 is a iiap 12, which closes an opening which leads through this plate to the interior of the hollow hub 9, forming a pocket having ready Serial No. 171,521. access, wherein may be deposited the handle to be described in the following paragraphs. On the hollow hub 9 is mounted the gearwheel 13, which is detachably secured by screws 13 to plate 10. This wheel rests on the ring 7, which forms a bearing therefor.

Mounted between the wheel 13, on the periphery thereof, and the teeth 8 on the interior of casing 2 is a toothed wheel 14, which engages the teeth of both these parts 13 and 8. This wheel 14 has a screw-threaded opening therein to receive the handle 15, which is removably secured therein and which travels in the slot 11.

By making the gear-wheels 14 and 13 of different sizes the speed with which the hub is revolved may be varied as desired when the latter travels completely around the former. In the present arrangement the wheel 13 travels two and one-half revolutions to one revolution of the wheel 14. The wheel 13 is also adapted to receive the handle 15, having a screw-threaded recess 17 in one face thereof. It is thus seen that the handle 15 may be changed from one wheel to the other.

The operation of my device is easily understood. The tape being attached in an ordinary mannerto the hub 9, the handle is turned in the slot 11 to move the wheel 14C around the teeth of the casing 2, which operation turns the Wheel 13 and winds up the tape upon the hub 9.

It is further to be noted that the casings may be easily taken apart, the wheel 13 and plate 10 removed together, and the wheel 14 taken out, thus giving ready access to all parts and to the tape itself for repairs or other purposes.

Minor changes may be made in the details of the device without departing from the spirit of my invention.

'What is desired to be protected by Letters Patent and what I claim is-- 1. A tape-holder -comprising a separable casing, one portion thereof provided with teeth upon the interior thereof, means for winding a tape, rotatable means engaging said means and the said teeth, and means for rotating the same, substantially as described.

2. A holder for a tape comprising a two-part casing, o'ne of said parts having one face cut away, ahollow hub mounted in said part adapted to receive the tape, having an outwardlyextending plate formed integral therewith, a gear-wheel mounted on said hub, and a gearwheel engaging said last-named wheel having lremovable means thereon for actuating the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. A device of the character described comprising a casing having one portion thereof provided with teeth on the interior thereof, rotatable means for supporting a tape carried in said casing, means adapted to rotate therewith, and means engaging the last -named means and the teeth of the casing adapted to actuate and move with the same, substantially as described.

A tape-holder comprising two portions forming a tape-receiving chamber therebetween, one of said parts having teeth extending around the interior wall thereof, a tapereceiving hub mounted 'in said part and eX- tending into the said chamber, a gear-wheel carried thereby, having a recess in one face thereof, a second gear-wheel engaging said wheel and the teeth of the casing provided with a recess therein, and removable means adapted to be-inserted in said recesses to actuate the said gears and hub, substantially as described.

In a device of the type set forth comprising in combination with a casing, a hollow hub mounted therein, an apertured plate formed integral therewith, one of said apertures connecting with the hollow interior of the hub, means for closing said aperture, and means engaging said plate adapted to rotate said hub to wind a tape thereon, substantially as described.

6. In combination with a casing having its front face cut away, a rotatable plate forming a portion of said face forming a slot between the same and the cut-away portion of the casing, a hub supporting said plate, a gear-wheel carried thereby secured to said plate, a gearwheel adapted to actuate the same, and a removable handle adapted to actuate either of said gears for dilerent speeds of rotation of the hub, substantially as described.
