CLOTHES-LINE REEL.
am e.
Application filed November 5, 1909.
and useful Improvements in ClothesLine Reels, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to improvements in clothes line reels.
It is of the type in which a reel is rotatively mounted in a casing, a spring and gearing being provided for rotating the reel so as to wind thereon a clothes line so that the clothes line, when not in use, may be stored in the casing.
The object of my invention is to provide a clothes line reel of the character described, which is cheap to manufacture, easily operated, and not liable to get out of order.
My invention provides further, a con: struction which permits the reel and the clothes line wound thereupon being readily removed bodily from the casing for the pur pose of drying the clothes line in casethat it should become wet.
Another feature of my invention is the provision of means by which the spring which rotates the reel may be provided with an initial tension prior to the securin thereto of the clothes line.
Other novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my inventionFigure 1 is a side elevation with the cover removed and a portion of the casing broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the dotted line w-b of Fig. 1, the cover and crank being in operative position. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the dotted line 0d of Fig. 2.
Similar reference characters denote similar parts.
1 denotes the casing comprising preferably a rectangular box having a removable side which forms a cover 2, removably secured to the casing in any suitable manner, as by screws 3. In the casing is mounted a reel having oppositely extending central trunnions 5 and 6, rotatively mounted respectively in bearings 7 and 8, secured respectively to the inner side of the cover 2 and to the inner side of the opposite wall of the casing. Secured upon the trunnion 6 is a pinion 9, which meshes with a spur gear Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 526,439.
wheel 10, rotatively mounted on horizontal stud 11, secured to thebearing 8. A coil sprlng 12 encircles the hub 13 of the gear wheel 10, one end of the spring being secured to said hub and the other end to a pin 14, secured to the bearing 8. A clothes line 15, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and in solid lines in Fig. 2, is secured to and adapted to be wound upon the reel 4, and is extended through an opening 16 provided in one vertical wall of the casing 1. Preferably detachably secured to the trunnion 5, is a crank handle 17, which is mounted upon the portion of the trunnion which extendsthrough the cover 2. By using the crank handle 17 the reel f may be turned so as to impart an initial tension to the coil spring 12.
In operating my invention, when the clothes line 15 is withdrawn through the opening 16, the reel 4 is turned so as to tightly wind the spring 12. Upon releasing the outer end of the clothes line the spring, by means of the gear wheel 10 and pinion 9,
' will rotate the reel 4 so as to wind the clothes line thereon.
If at any time the clothes line, when extended, becomes wet, and it is desired to quickly dry it to prevent its becoming moldy and thereby liable to deterioration, this may be readily accomplished by removing the screws 3 and bodily withdrawing the cover, reel and clothes line from the casing. The line may then be dried in any suitable manner, after which the parts may be quickly replaced in their original positions.
If desired, the casing 1 may have mounted on it a closure 18, of any suitable type for covering the opening 16 at times when the clothes line isretracted completely into the casing.
Various modifications of my invention,.

mounted on the cover and removable with the cover from said casing, a gear wheel rotatively mounted in the casing, a spring for rotating the gear wheel, and a pinion secured to and rotatable with the reel and movable with the reel to and from the casing without removing the spring and movable to and from a position in which it will engage the gear wheel. v
In testimony whereof I have signed my 15 name to this specification in presence of two siihscribing witnesses. H
