SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 756,638, dated April 5, 1904.

Be it known that I, GEORGE IRA HERRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wheaton, in the county of Dupage and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Surveyors Pins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a pin or peg to be used in conjunction with a surveyors tape in fieldwork.
The object of my invention is to produce a peg or pin which constitutes a holder for the tape, to which the tape may be readily secured. Furthermore, the peg herein described provides for a vertical adjustment of the tapeholding means and permits also of a swinging movement of the tape andholder upon the peg, which features will be more specifically set out in the specification following and which are fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the device, showing the tape holding and adjusting means. Fig. 2 is a central section of the device. Fig. 3 is a section taken through the line a a of Fig. 2. Fig. 4c is a top plan View looking down on the holding device for the tape.
Referring to the drawings more particularly, 1 is the main body of an ordinary pin which is provided with a vertical slot 2, running nearly the whole length thereof. Mounted on the pin 1 is the holder, which comprises a collar 3, fitting loosely around the pin, which has angularly-disposed curved portions 3 3 extending outwardly therefrom, having a curved space between the same. Upon this collar 3 and supported between the portions 3 is a slidable clamp member 4, which is curved, as shown, and adapted to secure the tape against the portion of the collar 3 which surrounds the pin 1, which forms the other member of the clamp. In the forward part of the collar 3 and integral therewith is the plate 5, which carries a screw member 6. This screw member extends without the collar 3 and engages on its inner end with the clamp 4 at the point 6. By this means the clamp member 3 may be adjusted for different thicknesses of tape, being drawn away from or forced toward the inner wall of the collar 3 upon movement of the screw 6. Beneath this holding means is located the collar 7, which is adjustable upon the pin 1 and has a screw 8, extending therethrough and slidably engaging in the slot 2 of the pin 1.
The curves of the clamp member 4: and of the portions 3 3 of the collar 3 are so proportioned that the measurement by means of the tape is taken practically from the center of the pin when the tape is attached to the holder.
The tape is inserted around the clamp member and between the portions 3 3 of the collar 3, and then the screw 6 is turned to force the clamp member against the collar to securely hold the tape, as is readily seen.
It is also apparent that an upward adjustment of the holder may be made to avoid objects on the ground by moving the collar 7 to any desired position on the pin and that the holder may be swung around on the pin as a pivot.
Changes may be introduced into this device and variations in detail made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
WVhat I desire to protect by Letters Patent and what I claim is 1. In a device of the type set forth, the combination of a pin provided with a longitudinal slot, a holder for a tape loosely mounted thereon, the said holder consisting of a collar and a slidable clamp member mounted therein, and an adjustable supporting means for said holder provided with a means for engaging the said slot, as and for the purpose setout.
2. A surveyors pin comprising in combination with the pin, a tape-holder consisting of a collar and a slidable clamp member mounted therein, and a means for supporting the holder in diiferent positions, substantially as described.
3. A device of the character described comprising a pin provided with a vertical slot along the length thereof, a holder for a tape mounted for rotation thereon consisting of a collar and a clamp member mounted therein, said collar beingverticallyadjustable upon the pin and adapted to support the holder on said pin, and means carried by said collar engaging the slotof said pin, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4:. A device of the character described comprising a pin, a holder for a tape mounted thereon, said holder comprising a collar surrounding said pin provided with outwardlyextended curved portions, a clamp member slidabletherein, means for adjusting the clamp member, and means for vertically adjusting the holder upon the pin, substantially as described.
5. In combination with a pin having a vertical slot therein, a vertically-movable collar having means engaging said slot, and a tapeholding means mounted on the pin and supported by said collar, the said holder consisting of a collar and a clamping member, substantially as set forth.
6. In combination with a pin provided with a vertical slot, an adjustable collar, means carried by the collar engaging in the said slot to secure the collar in adjusted position, and a tape-holding means comprising a collar loosely mounted on the pin and supported by said first named collar, outwardly extending curved portions formed integral with said collar having a space therebetween, a slidable clamp member provided with a curved portion slidably supported between said portions and a screw member carried in said collar engaging the clamp member adapted to adjust the same, substantially as and for the purpose described.
