HENRY D. BLAKE, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO P. AND
F.'CORBIN, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 75,663, dated March 17, 1868.
die fitiythttlt rrfrmt tn ilt its: ittttrrt time an mating not at it; tltmt.
TO ALL WHOM IT 'MAY CONCERN Be it known that I, HENRY D. BLAKE, of New vBritain, in the State of Connecticut, have invented, made,
andap'plie'd. to u'sea certain new and useful Improvement in Riveting-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following. tobe' a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being bad to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure lis a plan of my said machine. Figure 2 is a vertical section at the line :0 m. Figure? is an end view, and Figure 4 a side view of the riveting-die; and v v I Figure 5 is a side vicw'of a portion of a hinge, showing the rivet-head at one end of the wire or pin.
Similar marks of reference denote thesame parts. v =Heretofore it has been usual to rivet up the pins'of hinges by a hammer, the concussion of which is likely to bend the pin, causing the same to bind and the hinge to work stiti'. I I My invention-is especially adapted to the riveting of hinges, but maybe applied to any other character of rivet in'which the-heads can be formed at the ,two ends of the wire or rod simultaneously; and said invention consists in spreading the metal to form the rivet-heads by the revolution of a die or spreader acting under pressure, to gradually ,cxjtendthe metal and form the head with a rounded and smooth surface.
, This iimprovement in rivetihg may be used for the pins of butt or strap-hinges. In the drawing, a is a bed, upon which are boxes carrying the main driving-shaft b, on which are the pulkeys 0 d, and gear-wheel e. fis a shaft supported in a movable head, g, and rotated by a cross-belt from the pulley e. Thephead g is supported by the'bed a, and is provided with a screw-clamp below the slotted bed,'to
allow the head to beadjusted nearer to or further from the mandrel-head]; to accommodate the length of rivet to be operated upon, and the'head k may also be similarly adjusted. The head It carries a mandrel or shaft, 1', and'nt its end, and the end of the shaftf facing it, aredies 7c lc, that form the rivet-heads, and are more particularly described hereafter. The shaft 2' is provided with a pulley, Z, and belt to the pulley d,,and m isa spring and sliding forlf taking a'neck in the shaft 2', and keeping it against the slide 11., that is fitted to move endwise in the'boxes 2 2, onh, by a lever, a, on a fulcrum 3, acted upon by a cam, 12, on the shaft 9, that is driven by the wheel r to the gear e. I pp It will now be understood that the shaftsf andi are revolved in oppositedirections, that they carry at their ends riveting-dies, that one of the shafts is moved ondwise as it revolves, and that the parts are to be so adjusted thatthe distance between the dies-k k, at the termination of each movement, corresponds to the length of the riveted wire. 1 l l I The riveting is effected by the rotation, in opposite directions, of the dies that act by pressure at the ends ofthe'wire, 'rod, or rivet-blank, to spread? extend, and smooth the metal without'bending the wire or rod.
The red lines in 'fig. 3 represent the size of the wire, and of the headwithin the die The position oi the cam 12 is adjustable by set-screws, so that the movement of the dies endwise can be accurately determined. I
What 'I claim, and-desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp A riveting-tool composed of a rod of metal having V-shaped grooves crossing and radiating from its longitudinal axis across a face or end surface which is otherwise perpendicular to the axis of said rod, substantially as described. 1
I I also claim the riveting-tool set forth in the foregoing claim, in combination with mechanism for operating the same, arranged substantially as described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, this.3d day of October, A. D. 18 67.
HENRY D. BLAKE.
Witnesses Ones. Pncx, Enwr L. Pnroa.
