PATENT OFFICE.
OHALKLEY B. BALDWIN, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO SAMUEL IV. EVANS, J R, TRADING AS S. WV. EVANS & SON, OF PHILA- DELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
UMBRELLA-GEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 756,562, dated April 5, 1904.
Application filed June 7, 1902. Serial No. 110,574. (No model.)
To all whmn it vncty concern:
Be it known that I, CI-IALKLEY B. BALDWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Connecting Joints for Umbrella Ribs and Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a joint for con- IO necting a rib and stretcher of an umbrella or parasol, embodying a clip or geat adapted to firmly clasp the rib and ears forming strong and durable bearings for the pivot of the stretcher and locating said pivot outside of the rib, where it is most convenient for application and removal and change in the contour of the rib is avoided, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a joint embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the joint in position on an umbrella-rib. Fig. 3 represents a section thereof on line :0 m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4; represents a perspective view of a prepared blank employed for making joint embodying my invention. Fig. 5 represents a longitudinal section thereof on line 3/ 1 Fig. 6 represents a perspective view of the blank in partially-finished condition. 0 Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a geat or lap consisting of the channeled body B, which is adapted to embrace the back and sides of an umbrella-rib (J, the ears or cheeks D, which are continuous inwardly from the sides of the body and are of segmental form, producing swells or enlargements in which are the openings E to receive the pivot E of the 4 stretcher F and the lips G, which are inturned from said ears and enter the groove H of said rib and engage the walls thereof, it being seen that the ears are each composed of two members placed side by side, thus pro- 4 5 ducing a strong and durable structure on which the pivot Eis mounted, the end of the stretcher being fitted between the opposite pairs of lips. Furthermore, the body B exteriorly embraces the rib C as a clip, and when said body and contiguous portion of the rib are pressed or 5 pinched together said body is tightly held in position assisted by the engagement of the lips G with the interior of the rib,'so that the geat is prevented from shifting and turning on the rib.
The construction of the geat admits of the advantageous production of the same from the strip of metal or blank J, in which the metal is doubled on itself or crimped at intervals, as at K, producing two thicknesses of metal, as at a a. The crimped piece is then cut off at the lines 6 Z) and bent around to the form shown in Fig. 6, after which the crimps are brought parallel and close to each other and the ends 0 c of the piece turned up,producing 5 the lips G, which are adapted to enter the groove H. The lips are punched or pierced to receive the pivot E, either before or after application to the rib.
It will be noticed that the swells of the ears D project beyond the edges of the groove of the rib, so that said pivot may be inserted into said ears and the stretcher outside of said groove for connection of the parts and likewise removed for purposes of repairs, both in most convenient manner. 7
' In Fig. 4E the blank is shown as adapted for making two geats, it being evident that said blank may be lengthened for multiplying the number of geats to be made,or the blank may 30 be shortened for making a single goat.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in each case to 5 the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A trough shaped geat having its sides- 9 turned inward. their entire length forming outwardly-extending portions doubled on each of said outwardly-extending portions being curved.
