Description

, forming part of this specification.'

Letters .Patent No. '75,554, dated Mwah-17, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN BEL'IING.
@Le Segnale referat it in itin trttets rtnit mit mating tnt ut its im.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, H. LEMAISTRE, of Brussels, Belgium, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Belting; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings,
Figure 1 represents an edge view of two ends of belting joincd.= Figure 2 is an edge view of the two ends before they are joined.' Figure 3 is a. face viewof a belt joined, as in iig. 1.
Figure 4 is an edge view of a belt composed of two thicknesses of leather, Vthe ends in each thickness being e connected according to my improvedplan. l
Figure 5 is a face view of the double belt. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. v VThis invention relates toa new method of joining the ends of the leather straps, which compose a. belt for machinery, and also in a novelcoinposition for-cementing the straps.
g The invention consists, first, in taperingthe ends of the straps to be united to a. ne edge, and in arrang-` ing a small cap on one of the straps, at the commencement of the taperingv portion, to receive the edge of the other strap. When the surfaces are roughened and covered with a strong cement, the two straps will he firmly'A connected. v
The invention consists, also, in combininggutta perche. with sulphuret of carbon, in such manner as to form a strong cement for firmly uniting two pieces of leather.
A represents -th'efend of a leather strap, to be connected with another strap, B, to form ar belt. The end of the strap A is tapered to a fine edge, as is also that' ofthe strap B, as shown., On the strap B is'also, at the root of' the tapering part, formed a tapering lip, a, between which and the tapering end b a groove -1is formed. The end of the strap A is fitted into this groove, as in iig. 1and perfectly smooth surfaces will he formed by the thus connected straps.
IBefore the straps are connected, the surfaces of their tapering ends arefroughened by suitable apparatus,
and are thenccvered with a s'uitahlecemen then the pieces are joined, and when the cement isdry, the pieces will be firmly united. By means of veyelets c c,- the pieces may be still more rmlyconnected.
For belts consisting of two or more thicknesses of leather, each thickness, in itself, is composed off pieces of leather, which are joined in the aforesaid manner, as'shown in g. 4, The thicknesses are then laid one u'pon the other, with the requisite layer of cement between them. Theement by which the leather straps are connected is composed of three parts of gut-ta perche. and.five\parts of sulphuret ofcarbon.
The gutta perche. should be cut into as small pieces .ascan conveniently be done, to' facilitate its dissolution, and the pieces are then pnt into a vessel containing the salphuret of carbon, carebeing taken' that the vessel be not completely filled, so as to allow the swelling of the contents. After from twenty-four 'to fortyeight hours, according' tp Athe degreecf heat, the solution will'be. perfected. The solution is then applied to the rougheued surface of the leather, and is allowed to dry thereon before the pieces of leather arejoined. When dry, the solution will appear whitish.
When the compositionfis drylupon theparts to be united,.the said parts are heldl over u. heated hearth, and by warming, the cement is again dissolved. When. then, the pieces are brought together, an`d the cement is left to dry forl the second time, theywill. be-irnily united.
I claim as new,'.an"d desire to secure by Letters Patent- A Y 1. The manner herein shown and described of uniting pieces of leather for making belts,by tapering their ends and leaving a. lip, a, on everyother end, ias-described, and uniting them by the means hereinafter described.
2. Cutting the ends of leatherstraps, substantially in the manner described, so that they can easily be.
united for belting, as lset forth.` The above specification of `myinvention signed by me, this'19th day of March, 1867.
