GOVERING POR SHAFT-COUPLINGS.

Know all men that I, SIDNEY E. CHASE, of Mendon,`in the county of St'. Joseph, and State of-Michigan,
` have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Coverings to Couplings; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, 'and to the letters of reference maLrked thereon,"and being a part of this specification.
vThe object of this invention is to so construct a covering for couplings in tumbling-rods, and all other couplings .where danger arises to persons passing them, that it will `prevent entirely any liability to accident i from clothes catching, and thereby doing injury to life and limb.
In order to accomplish this object, I construct a box or cylinder, A, cut in two equal parts longitudinally. This box or cylinder may be made of any Asuitable material, such as sheet, wrought, or cost metal, or wood, or
Aof' wood and metal combined. The two parts should be hinged together by any proper hinge, B, and,` when closed, be secured by any proper device, C, which will eifectually keep it closed, and, at the same time, not
leave any projecting points to catch any object that may come near it. The ends, D, should be made conical,
and a. suicient aperture, E, should be made in each end to admit the shaft or rod, and allow the cover ,to be claspedand fastened around it. p
By this means I make a coupling-cover that will revolve with the rod or shaft loosely, so that, should anything` come in contact with it, it will stop and allow the shaft and coupling to revolve inside it.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction of a coupling-cover, as hereinbefnre described, and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
