Be it known that I, .TOEN Q'. BIRKEY, of Philadelphia, in the county -ot Philadelphia, and State of VPen-nsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Apparatus for Collecting, Ncutralizing'or Destroyingall Noxious vapors arising 'from the Combustionot' all Fuel used 'in'Gencuting Heat; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and enact description thereof, reference `being' had .to the accompanying drawings, and to-the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a partof this speciication, in which- Y Figure 1 represents a vertical section of my apparatus;

In the combustion of all fucl'used for generating heat'there always arises adeleterious odor, which, if not carried off by some mechanical lapparatus,causes disease, and, in many instances, death; hence, are found in' al-l apparatus used for the 4purpose ef generating heat,` pipes, chimneys, or 4some contrivance for thatspecial purpose. New, more particularly in the combustion of gas,and the same of coal or any kind-of fuel, we have, arising from the combustion, carbonio acid, along with sulphurous acid,carbonc oxide, and other gases, all deleterious to health. u l

To construct an apparatus wherebygI'can` have command ofV all the heutA generated, and at the same time collect, neutralize'or destroy all the deleterious gases, without the aid'ot any outlet, whereby more or less of the heat generated escapes with the noxious gases, is my object.

The nature-of this invention 'consists in the employment offa;funnel-shaped. device,4or .its equivalent, for collecting the noxious-vapors, deleterious gases,'and other impurities arising from the combustion of fuel, in combination with a pipe, tube, or outlet, for lcunducting the said gases and impurities to the vessel whereY the same are neutralized, substantially as willI be hereinafter set forth, and in conducting' to and condensing in water 4or chemical agent the gases, vapors, or `bther impurities arising from combustion, for the purpose of neutralizing or\destroying the evil elects ofl said gases, Ste. v i

To enable othersskilled in' the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe its construction and operation. v

represents a drum, with two series of 'perforations near its'base, the low-er series being designed to admit the air for supportingeombustion, and 'the upper series te admit air for the purpose of being heated. -Inaddition to these perforations there 'is a thirdvseriesnear the top ofthe drum A, for the emission of the heated air. c designates a platform near the base of the drum A, the design of which is to support the vesseIB, the said vessel being intended to be illed'with water or other chemical agent. D represents a receiver, with a iiange at the Y lower end',l which tits tightly 'in the' base of the drum.' Thel receiver D is made conical in form, as seen in fig.

'I have adopted as simple a construction as possible, to. demonstrate that combustion can bekept up, and all heat .generated to be at our command, without-.the deleterious gases. t

The operation of myiinvention is as follows: When gas isused, the drum is placed over the dame, so that the receiver will collect and conduct, by meansl of the pipe k, the deleteriousga'ses, 85e., tothe vessel containing clear water, or any chemical agent. There they are condensed and completely neutralized, and may be analyzed by one wishing to do so, or the drum may be set'over a stove or any other device in which fuel of any kind is consumed, when a like result will follow.-` I h u What I desire to secure'by Letters Patent, isi-- 1. The receiver D, for collecting the noxious vapors, deleterious gases, and other `in'ipurities arising from the combustion of fue1,'in combination with a pipe, tube, or outlet, for conducting the said gases and impurities to the vessclwhere the'same are neutralized, substantially as set Yforth.
