PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM FRIEDBERGQOF YORK, N.
ALARM DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION.forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,125, dated March 22, 1904:. Application filed November 11, 1903. Serial No. 180,648- (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM FRIEDBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and usei ful Improvements in Alarm Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved house-alarm of the class known as burglaralarms, a further object being to provide a device of this class which is operated by placing the hand on the outer door-knob; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms apart, said drawing being a sectional view of a part of a door provided with my improvement, part of the improvement being also in section, the separate parts of the device being also designated by suitable reference characters.
In the drawing formingpart of this specification I have shown at a a part of a door having a lock-space b and through which is passed the usual knob-spindle 0, provided with an inner knob d and an outer knob 0Z The spindle c is hollow and is provided on the inner side of the door a and in one side thereof with a hole 6, through which is passed'electric'wires f and The outer knob 0i is composed of an inner part it and an outer part 1', and these parts are respectively provided with rims k and t the rim 9? of the part overlapping the rim b of the part it. The rim 7& is screw-threaded for a short distance on the outer side thereof, as shown at 71?, while the rim 6 is similarly threaded on the inner side thereof, as shown' at i and by means of this construction the part c' is connected with the part it by being screwed thereonto, and after the screws h and d are disconnected the part 9, will have a short sliding movement on the part it, and this movement is limited by screws j, passed through the slots 10 in the rim '5 of the part@' and into the part it. The wires f and j are passed into the outer knob 01 as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and one of said wires is connected with a contact device m and the other with a spring-arm n,
which is bowed outwardly, as shown at a and provided with an end piece a adapted to make connection with the contact device m, and the outer part '0' of the knob d is provided centrally with an inwardly-directed projection 0, adapted to bear on the spring-arm n and to normally hold the part i of said knob in its outermost position. b
At any suitable or desirable point within the house is placed an electric-alarm device p and a battery 10 and one of the wires f and g is connected with said alarm device and the other with the battery 9?, and another wire 10 also connects the alarm device and said bat-.
tery, and with this construction it will be seen that thealarm device 10 is placed in an open circuit, which is adapted to be closed by simply placing the hand on the outer part i of the knob d any appreciable pressure on said part 2' being suflicient to force it inwardly, so that the contact device m and 02 the latter of which is on the spring-arm a, will be forced into connection, and when the pressure on the part i of the knob d is removed the said part i will be forced outwardly and the circuit broken.
This device is exceedingly simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive and well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and my invention is not limited to the exact details herein shown and described for making the outer part of the knob d movable on the inner part thereof, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations in the construction herein shown and described as fully come within the scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an apparatus of the class described, a hollow spindle for door-knobs provided at one end with a knob composed of an inner and an outer part, the outer part being provided with a rim which incloses a corresponding rim formed on the inner part, said outer part being also movable on the inner part longitudinally of the spindle, and two contact devices placed within said knob and normally separated and adapted to be brought together by pressure on the outer part of the knob, substantially as shown and described. i
2. In an apparatus of the class described, a hollow spindle for door-knobs provided at one end with a knob composed of an inner and an outer part, the outer part being provided with a rim which incloses a corresponding rim formed on the inner part, said outer part being also movable on the inner part longitudinally of the spindle, and two contact devices placed within said knob and normally separated and adapted to be brought together by pressure on the outer part of the knob, said hollow spindle being also provided with electric wires which pass therethrough and into said knob, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 10th day of November, 1903.
WILLIAM FRIEDBERG.
