TIME-DAMPER MECHANISM.
sPEoIFIcATI'oN' forming part of Letters Patent No. 754,446, dated March '15, 1964.
Application filed November 19, 1903. erial IIo. 181,815. (No model.)
To all whom it may concer'n:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM. HARTZELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the'county'of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Time-Damper Mechanism, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof.
The object of the present invention is to provide novel mechanism which can be set for automatically operating at predetermined pe: riods the lids and dampers of a stove, range, or other suitable heater.
The invention consists of the improvements hereinafter described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which Figure I is a front elevational view of a range or stove, showing in application thereto the time damper mechanism of the invention. Fig. II is a detached side elevational view of a portion of the mechanism. Fig. III is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. II. Fig. IV is'a sectional view taken on a line 4 4 of Fig. III, and Fig. V is a modified form of the device.
Referring to the drawings, or represents a stove or range, with its complemental firechamber 6 and ash-pit b. l
0 is an auxiliary plate adapted to be fitted to the openings ordinarily occupied by the lids of a stove or range. As shown in Fig. III, this auxiliary lid consists of two members, one of which is rotatable, having openings adapted to register with each other. Formed integral with the base ofthis lid is a socket 6, adapted to receive a bracket f. Fulcrumed to the bracket f is an arm 9, having depending therefrom a projection 9'. Having pivotal engagement therewith is a bifurcated fingerg adapted to engage a pin cZ, projecting from the upper member of the auxiliary. lid. Pivoted to one end of the arm g'is aforked rod h, whose function will appear hereinafter. The opposite end of the arm g is under spring tension, as at i. If desired, a weight may be employed to cause the army to drop by gravity". De
tachably attached to the bracket is a timepiece, as an alarm-clock, provided with the usual alarm-winding stem 7'. Adapted to rest upon this stem is a ring or hook, which is attached to a chain or flexible connection 74,
which in turn is connected with thear'm g, as shown. Referring to the ash-pit b the same is closed by the ordinary hinged door and its complemental damper. The pin or knob Z of the said damper has secured to it-springs Z In the morning the damper is opened, the
lid returned to its proper place, or the trap closed, with the result that the fire burns up prior to throwing on a fresh supply of coal. By the present invention it is calculated'to cause the fire to burn up in the morning by automatic means in the following manner, to
wit: The alarm is set at the desired'time, and
, the auxiliary plate, together with its bracket,
having taken the place of the ordinary lid of the stove or range, the clock is suspended in 4 the manner described and the flexible member 70 placed over the projection j and the forked member placed in engagement with the part Z on the damper. The rotatable member of the auxiliary lid 0 is then adjusted by hand for admitting the proper amount of air, this being facilitated by the rotation of the pin d and the bifurcated member g In the morning the alarm releases the stem 1' and the flexible member is, whereupon the spring-controlled arm g shifts the member 9 thus causing the closing of the auxiliary plate andforcing downward the rod h, which releases the spring Z and causes the damper to open. When the fire has burned up sufficiently, the device may obviously be detached from the stove or range, the clock used for ordinary purposes, and the rest of the apparatus set to one side. In the modification shown in Fig. V the auxiliary plate consists of a base having a hinged member adapted to be left for the night in the position shown in the figure. In the morning when the alarm goes off the flexible member 70 is released, the plate falls by gravity, the rod 7b is pushed downward, and the damper opened, as hereinbefore described.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains that modifications may be made in detail without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence I wish it understood that I do not limit myself to the recise construction and arrangement of parts erein shown and described; but,
Having thus described the nature and objects of the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a stove or range of an auxiliary plate or lid provided with openings adapted to register with each other, a supporting device carried thereby and having fulcrumed therewith a spring-controlled arm, a member for shifting the plate operated thereby, a spring-operated damper, a clock mechanism, suspended from said supporting device and means for releasing the arm and damper, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a stove or range of an auxiliary plate or lid having openings for registering with each other, a supporting device carried thereby, a spring operated damper, a clock mechanism, a springcontrolled arm having a projection, a member for shifting the plate attached thereto, a rod between the arm and the damper and a flexible member carried by the arm and adapted to be released by the clock mechanism, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a stove or range of a two-part auxiliary plate or lid having openings adapted to register with each other, one of which parts being provided with a pin, and a supporting device carried by the other of said parts, a spring-controlled arm, fulcrumed to said support and adapted to shift a forked member having engagement with the said pin, a spring-controlled damper, a rod connected with the arm and adapted to release the said spring, a clock mechanism suspended from the support and a flexible member adapted to be released by the winding-stem of the clock to operate the arm, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal.
WILLIAM HARTZELL.
