SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 753,726, dated March 1, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, CLARENcE G. Mc- LAUGHLIN and HAROLD H. MOLAUGHLIN, citizens of the United States, residing at Colum-' swing of this class of superior construction and arrangement of parts and to so construct the frame portions of our improved swing as to facilitate the separation and folding of the parts into compact form for the purposes of shipping or storing. These objects we accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accorn panying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved swing. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of portions of the platform and frame parts with which said platform is connected. Fig. 4 is a detail plan view illustrating the manner of connecting the sections of one of the lower standard-connecting bars. Fig. 5 is a side elevation in detail of one of the chair-arms, and Fig. 6 is a plan view of the same.

Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

In carrying out our invention we employ opposing pairs of supporting-standards 1, the standards of each pair being connected at their upper ends by cross-bars 2 and connected at their lower ends in the manner hereinafter described. The supporting frames thus produced are, as indicated in the drawings, inclined toward each other ormade to converge toward their upper ends, and the opposing standards 1 are connected in their'upper portions through the medium of crossed bars 3, the latter being connected at their center by a bolt 4 and similarly connected at their ends to said standards 1 by bolts 5 and 6. In the construction of the standards 1 we form each of the same, as indicated in the drawings, in two sections, these sections being indicated at Serial No. 163,496. (No model.)

The joint, which is formed, preferably, above the center of the length of the standard, is effected by halving the end portions of said sections and fitting the tongue in f one of said sections thus produced into the recess or cut-away portion of the remaining section. The reduced end portions or tongues thus united are connected by a bolt 7. We also connect the standards 1 of each pair near their lower ends by bar-sections 8,the adjoining ends of said sections being preferably connected by a detachable cleat 9. It will be noted that each of the lower bolts 5, which connects one of the bars 3 with a standard 1, passes through said standard at the junction of the tongue portion of the standard-section 2 and the shoulder of the section 1", formed by halving the latter, thus permitting the lower end of the crossed bar 3 being clamped over portions of both sections of the standard. The upper bolts 6 are, as shown in the drawings, in the nature of rods which extend transversely between the standards of each pair, and on each of these rods are pivoted the upper ends of said supporting hanger-bar sections 9, the latter being preferablyconnected in their upper portions by a cross-rod 10. Each of the depending bars 9 has detachably secured thereto, through the medium of bolts 11,comparatively short extension-sections 12. The lower ends of each pair of the sections 12 are connected through the medium of across-rod 13, and with this cross-rod, adjacent to each of the bar-sections 12, is pivotally connected the side framebar 14 of a suitable frame-chair back 15, which normally inclines outward between the standards 1. Pivotally mounted between each pair of chair side bars 14 is the outer end portion of a chair-seat frame 15, the forward end of this seat-frame being suitably supported upon a transverse rod 16, extending between the hanger-sections 12. The-seat side bars 14 are further connected with the seat-supporting or hanger bars 9 through the medium of chairarm sections or bars 17 and 18. Each of the sections 17 which has its outer end connected with the corresponding seat-back bar 14, is formed on its upper side with the desired number of notches 19, with one of which is adapted to engage the laterally-projecting pin 20 of the outer end of the seat-arm sections 18. Each of these seat-arm sections 18 has its inner end pivotally connected with the corresponding hanger-bar 9 through the medium of the bolts 11. Each of the sections 18 also has secured on its upper side a laterally-projecting arm-rest 22, the outer end of which slightly overlaps the inner end of the section 17.

Extending between the rods 13 at the bottoms of the hangers 9 12 is a horizontal footrest or platform 23. This platform is detachably connected with said rods 13 by notching the under sides of the seat and intermediate frame-bars 23 of the platform in the manner indicated at 24 in Fig. 3 and engaging said notched portions with the said rods 13.

As is usual in this class of swings, the occupants of the seats face each other, with their feet upon the platform 23, and the seat-supports,'together with the seats, are adapted to be swung backward and forward in the ordinary manner. The principal advantages of our invention, however, lie in the sectional construction of the standards, the seat-supporting bars, braces, &c., by means of which the parts may be separated and folded into compact form for shipping or storage. In carrying out the operation of separating and folding the parts for shipping it will readily be understood that the platform 22 may be detached from the rods 13 by lifting said platform therefrom, that one of each pair of hanger-bar bolts 11 may be removed, permitting the lower sections 12 and the chair-frames being folded upward between the hanger-bars 9. It will also be observed that by removing the bolts 4 and 5 of the cross-bars 3 and removing the bolts 7 and the bottom bar-cleats 1. In a lawn-swing, the combination with.

the pairs of standards formed of detachable sections, and bars 3 detachably connecting said standards, of the pairs of hanger-bars 9 depending from between said standards, detachable hanger-bar sections 12, a chair having its 1 back-frame hinged between the hanger exten sion-bars, a seat pivotally connected with each of said chair-frames, and adjustable chairarms formed of sections and adapted to extend between said chair-back frames and the hanger-bars and a removable platform 23 connecting the hanger-bar extensions 12, substantially as specified.

2. In a lawn-swing, the combination with the pairs of standards 1, each standard corn prising a section 1 and 2, said sections having overlapping reduced tongue portions bolted in connection with each other and bars 3 bolted at opposite ends to opposing standards and having their lower bolts passing through said standards at the junctions of the tongues of the lower standard-sections 2 with the shoulders of the upper standard-sections 1, of a swinging chair-supporting frame depending from between said standards, substantially as specified.
