TO ALL WHOM IT MY CONCERN:
i Be it known that I, CHARLES W. STAFFORD, of Saybrook', in the county of Middlesex, and State of Connecticnt, have invented a new and useful Improvement inPavement; and I do liereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, referencesbeing had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specioation, and in which similar letters indicate like parts.

The foundation of this paving is made of iron' w,hose upper surface shows a regular arrangement of square sockets, occupied by the lower ends of rectangular blocks, whose upper faces form the surface of the street.
The under side of each block is divided, having two projections b b, which occupy two adjacent sockets cc, in fonndationsframe C, The upper surface ot'ieach paving-block; B' is oblong, and thejoints are. broken, as Shown in iig. 2.
In the middle ot' each of the square sockets c eis a h ole,"d, to admit the passage downwards of water into the porous substratum on which the iron foundation-frames are laid.
The shape of the blocks, as seen in vertical section, is shown in figs. 1 and 3, in'ivhich the sides of the socketsk appear like flanges projecting upward from the base, thesides of the blocks B being tapered, to enable them to set in the sockets e, and resting by their shouldered sides :upon vthe upper edges of the sockets c, each block B occupying two sockets, as seen more' clearly in figs. 2 and 3. l
The blocks in the Centre of the street are made higher than thosevtowards the curb-stone, as seen in iig. 1, where the straight dotted line shows a level, and the surface of `the street has a camber or slightly arched form, draining the water to each side. l l
Figs. 4 and 5 show one mode of .ttaching thefoundation-frames C, and consists of a four-armed spanner und bolt. The spanner G is operated by ascrew, H,introdiced from above, andits four projections m m enter cavities in the under sides of the adjacent blocks, and hold them together as the Spanner is drawn up by the bolt H.
Fig; 6 shows another mode oi' attaching'the foundation-frames to each other by means of flangesl 'n n, links I), and keys s s. The flanges rest against each other; the link passesthrough corresponding holes in each end; the keys being driven down in the link, ythefastening is complete.
Each fastening-arrangement is so made as to be readily reached by removing a block, .and thus the pavement may be removed for the purpose of reaching the water or gas-pipes, &c. u
Having described my invention, what I claim therein, and desire ,to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement of the oblong blocks, decreasing in depth from the centre to the sides, so as to form a camber in the street, while resting on a level metallic base, C.
2. In combination with the bas-e cfa sectional pavement, I claim the spanner G, and screw Il, operating asdescribed.
8. I claim the combination and arrangement of'the anges n n, link p, and keys s s, for the purpose described.
