Description
C. WILLIAMS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Lam-s Patent No. 76,021, daad Mwah 24, ieee.
IMPROVED PAVEMENT.
@tige Samui: referat in in time @sitas ateirt mit mating mit nf tige same.
VTO ALL WIIOM IT MAY CON CERN:
Be it known that I, C. WILLIAMS, of the city of New York, 'in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Pavement; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, enabling those skilled in .the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming par-fl of this specification; in which drawing- Figurel represents a vertical section of this invention.
Figure 2 is a plan or top view thereof.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
rlhis invention consists in the arrangement of metal bars, inserted in suitable grooves in wooden blocks, the upper surfaces of said metal bars being iat or grooved, in such a manner that, by the metalbars, the surface of the wooden blocks is protected, and the wearing out of said blocks is materially reduced.
A represents a wooden-pavement block, which may be providedwith inverted dove-tailed grooves, a, to receive keys of" cement or any other suitable material, or`wl1iehw may be constructed in any other desirable manner. Into the surface of these blocks I insert metal bars, b, (by preference made of steel.) These metal bars are best made in the inverted dove-tailed shape, and secured in grooves of corresponding shape, as shown in the drawing; but they may also be made in any other desirable form or sliape.- If these metal bars `are made in the inverted dove-tailed shape, they also serve as keys to lock two adjoining blocks together, as described in a patent allowed to me, November 16, 1867.
The upper surfaces of the metal bars Y; may be made iiat, or they may be grooved, tovinerease the foot-hold of the draught-animals. i i
By inserting the metal bars in wooden blocks, the surface of said woodenbloeks is protected, so that they wiil not wear out as quick as they do without such bars, which will resist the most severe use for along time, and which, at the same time, retains all the advantages inherent to wooden pavements.
If the wood is'properly prepared, the metal bars can be inserted by casting them into the grooves.
I wish it distinctly understood that I do .not claim the use of metal bars, inserted either in the sides or under surfaces of Wooden-pavement blocks, for the purpose of fasteningsuch blocks together; but, having thus described my invention,
v What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of metal bars b, inserted into suitable grooves in the uppersurfaees of the woodenpavemont'bloclis A, so as to produce a wearing surface, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. l
C. WILLIAMS. Witnesses:
` w. Hrm,
E. F. KAISTENHUBER.
