Beit known thatI, HARRY J. MELLON, a citi zen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Pen and Pencil Holder and Calendar, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pencil-holders, and has for its object to provide a holder in which a pencil and a rubber may be supported and. a calendar conveniently placed upon the holder which will not interfere with the use of the' pencil or the eraser when the same is to be used.

Another object of my invention is to provide means carried by the pencilholder whereby the month, day of the month, and the day of the week may be accurately kept, said means being so constructed that from day to day the person using the pencil may operate the calendar, whereby an accurate account of the days of the month may be readily seen by the person using the holder.

A further object of my invention is to provide a pencil-holder and calendar combined which will be extremely simple in construction, strong and durable, and highly efficient for the uses to which it is applied.

Briefly described, the pencil-holder comprises a tubular casing which supports the pencil and eraser in either end thereof, and upon this tubular casing isplaced aplurality of sleeves or collars upon which are placed the names of the months, the day of the month, and the day of the Week, apertures being provided in one of the sleeves whereby the'day and month may be readily seen.

In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and where-v in like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in whichi Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the pencil-holder. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the holder proper. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the sleeves forming the outer casing of the holder. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the sleeve which carries the days of the week. Fig. 5 is an end view thereof. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the sleeve that carries the name of the month and they day of the month, and Fig. 7 isl an end View thereof.

In carrying out my invention I provide a pencil and eraser support which comprises a tubular casing 1, in the forward end of whichv is adapted to be placed a pencil 2, While in the end, as indicated` by reference-numeral 3, is adapted to be placed the eraser 4:. Near the outer end 3 of this tubular casing a spiral groove 5 is formed, which is adapted to be engaged by the spiral projection 8, formed in the sleeve 7. The spiral groove 5 of the cas-v ing 1 is formed by depressing the material comprising the casing inwardly, and the spiral projection v-8 of the sleeve 7 is formed in a similar mannerthat is, by depressing a part of sleeve 7, forming the groove 6, and producing the projection `8 -.t`o engage in grooves 5 and perform the function` of a thread. The I-forwvardend of theeasing 1 is sheared, as in-V dicated at 9, whereby the pencil will be readily held within the casing, and the exterior periphery of this casing, adjacent to the forward end, is made Octagon shape, as indicated at 10, and between this Octagon-shaped portion and the spiral groove 5 is placed the days of the month 11, these days of the month being printed upon a piece of paper 12 and the paper wou nd around the tubular holder, as shown in Fig.. 2 of the drawings. This paper is Wound in a spiral form conforming to the pitch of the spiral grooves 5.

. The sleeve `7', which carries the spiral projection 8, is ared or enlarged, as vindicated at 14, this iiared portion being again enlarged, as indicated at 15, the portion 15 of this sleeve being made octagon shaped, and in this octagon-shaped portion I form the oblong slot 16,

` and in the annular portion 14 Ifform a similar slot 17. In the sleeve 7, preferably adjacent to the enlarged annular portionlf, I provide an aperture 18, the object of which will be hereinafter more fully described. This sleeve `7 is adapted to snugly tit the casing 1, and loetween the enlarged annular portion 14 and the casing 1 I provide a sleeve 19, the forward IOC end 2O of which is sheared, asindicated at 21,

and slightly tapered, as indicated at 22, and upon this sleeve I arrange the names of the month and the number of days in the month,

said names and days being printed upon a pieceof paper 23, which is secured to the periphery of the sleeve 19. The names of the months are adapted to register with the oblong slots 17 in the annular enlargement 14 and the number of days in the month to be eX- posed through the slot 16 in the Octagon-shaped portion 15 of the sleeve8 when the sleeve 24 is withdrawn, as hereinafter described.

lIntermediate of the sleeve 19 and the octagon-shaped portion 15 of the sleeve 7 is placed the sleeve 24, which is Octagon in form, and upon the sides of this portion, as indicated at 25, I place the days of the Week, and the other end of this sleeve is contracted and formed Octagon shaped, as indicated at 26, and the portion intermediate of the ends of this sleeve is tapered, as indicated at 27.

When the sleeve 7 has been placed upon the casing 1, the aperture 18 formed in this sleeve is adapted to register with the days of the month, which are carried by the holder, as indicated at 11. The number of the days on the casing 1 is such that when the sleeve 24 is pulled out of sleeve 7 and sleeve 7 is rotated the number of the day will register with opening 18 and the month of the year will register with the oblong slot 17 of the annular enlargement 14 and the number o1' days in the month will register with the oblong slot 16 in the Octagon portion of said sleeve 7. When sleeve 24 is returned to position, the day of the week will appear through slot 16. It will be seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings that when these sleeves are in position the Octagon-shaped portion 25 will engage the Octagon-shaped portion 15 of the sleeve 7 and be rigidly held thereby, the portion 25 covering the number of days in each month, as carried by the sleeve 23, the number of days in the month corresponding with the name of the month located adjacent thereto. When it is desired to see how many days there are in a month, the sleeve 24 is pulled outwardly, whereby the number of days in a month may be seen through the oblong slot 16, and when the pencil is being used the day of the week, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, is adapted to register with this slot.

It will be readily seen that by rotating the sleeve 7 upon the casing 1 an`accurate account of the day of the month and the day of the week and also the month may be kept by the person using the pencil and by simply withdrawing the sleeve 24 from the octagonal portion 15 the sleeve 7 and sleeve 19 may be rotated with relation to each other, so as to expose any particular month at the slot 17.

While I have herein shown and described a practical embodyment of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination oi" an elongated tube having a pencil secured in its one end and an eraser in its other end, a sleeve rotatably secured upon said tube and having one end enlarged, said sleeve having apertures formed therein, figures being arranged upon the tube and adapted to register with one of the apertures in the sleeve, a second sleeve rotatably secured on said tube between the enlarged portion of the irst-named sleeve and tube, names of the month being placed on said sleeve and adapted' to register with another'of the apertures in the rst-named sleeve, an auxiliary sleeve adapted to be rotatably mounted upon the tube, a portion of said sleeve being enlarged and adapted to fit between the second sleeve and the enlarged portion of the first-named sleeve and having thereon the days of the week adapted to register with a third aperture in said first-named sleeve, substantially as described.

2. The combination of an elongated tube having a pencil secured in its one end and an eraser in its other end, a sleeve rotatably secured upon said tube and having one end enlarged, said sleeve having apertures formed therein, figures being arranged upon the tube and adapted to register with one of the apertures of the sleeve, a second sleeve rotatably secured on said tube between the enlarged portion of the irstnamed sleeve and the tube, names of the months and the number of days in the month being placed on said second sleeve and adapted to register with one or more of the apertures of the first-named sleeve, an auxiliary sleeve adapted to be rotatably mounted upon the tube, a portion of said sleeve being enlarged and adapted to it between the second sleeve and the enlarged portion of the first-named sleeve and having the days of the week upon a portion of said sleeve and adapted to register with an aperture in the rst-named sleeve, Substantially as described.

3. The combination of an elongated tube having a pencil secured in its one end and an eraser in its other end, said tube having its one end sheared and contracted to support the pencil, a sleeve rotatably secured upon said tube and having its one end engaging said tube and the other end enlarged, said sleeve having apertures formed therein, figures being arranged upon the tube and adapted to register with one of the apertures of the sleeve, a second sleeve rotatably secured on said tube, between the enlarged portion of the first-named sleeve and the tube, names of the months and the number oit' the days in the month being placed on said sleeve and adapted IOO IIO
