Description

FREDERICK I. SEYMOUR, OF WOLCOT'IVILLE, CONNECTICUT;

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, FREDERIK I. SEYMOUR, of Wolcottville, in the county of Litchfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Clamps for Forming Sheet-Metal Cones; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the said clamp at the line a: 2;, and
Figure 2 is an end view of the clamp, with the part at the line 1j y removed.
Similar marks of reference denote thesame parts.
Sheet-metal cones for lamp-chimney caps and other articles often require a head to be rolled or form'ed in the metal. This is very diicult to effect, particularly where they are lapped but not soldered or united at the seam. i
My invention relates to a clamp for holding the sheet-metal cone in the proper position while the bead or rib is being formed thereon, and said clamp becomes the guide for the tools that form such head or rib, so that tho same is bent in the `sheet metal with great accuracy.
In the drawing, a is a conc of metal of the shape ofthe sheet-metal cone to be formed, but shorter, so that, when said cone a is placed inside the sheet-metal conc b, the base of that cone, will project the amount necessary for receiving the rib or bead. v
The conical outer case e is of a size and shape to t the exterior ofthe sheet-metal cone 6, about the samo distance down it as the cone a; and ut the end ofthe cone b are inclines, z'z', over which are turned flanges, o o,
that project from the small end or neck of the cone a, so that the concs a and c can be firmly held together, to
clamp the sheet-metal cone b, by giving the cone'a a partial rotation, to bring the anges o o over the inclines A loose sleeve, c, is provided, surrounding the cone c, which the workman grasps as he presents the sheetmetal cone to the action of the tools that revolve and roll or form up the rib or bead in the sheet metal, the sleeve e allowing the cones a, Zz, and c to revolve freely during said operation.
l What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure hy Letters Patent, is-
1. The clamp for sheet-metal cones, formed of the conesa and c locked together, as and for the purposes set forth. l
2. And, in combination therewith, I claim the sleeve e, surrounding the cone c, substantially'as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, this 23d day of January, A` D. 1867.
FREDK I SEYMOUR.
