Description

No. 752.842 PATENTEDFEB. 23, 1904. W. M. KEELING.
PAPER TRIMMER. APPLIOA ION FILED MAR. 27. 1903 UNITED STATES Patented February 23, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
PAPER-TRIMMER.
spncrmcnmmn formingpart of Letters Patent No. 752,842, dated February 23, 1904.
Application filed March 27, 1903. Serial No. 149.856. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM M. KEELING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Trimmers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct a paper-trimmer supported by a handle portion and the blade made adjustable to cut strips of diiferent widths.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an isometrical representation of my improved paper-trimmer. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the cutter end.
The cutting-board is not shown in full width in order that the cutter might be shown on an enlarged scale.
The cutting-board 1 has a notch 2 in one end and has a sheet-metal plate 3 covering a portion of the top of the board. Along one edge of the board is secured a straight-edge 4, having a groove 5 in the upper edge and extending in its lengthwise direction.
The cutter is supported by a handle portion comprising the plate 6, located on edge in the groove 5 of the straight-edge, and has a transverse hub 7 provided with an opening. This hub has a boss 8, internally screw-threaded, and a handle 9 has a screw-threaded shank 10, located in the opening of the boss.
A rod 11 has a lengthwise groove 12 in its face and has graduations extending in the lengthwise direction of the rod. This rod is fitted to slide through the opening in the transverse hub 7 and is clamped in connection therewith by the screw-threaded shank 10 of the handle entering the groove 12, and this connection holds the rod from turning within the hub 7. One end of this rod has a reduced section 13, upon which is located the cutting-disk 14:, having a hub 15. A thumbhold 16 is located upon the rod and is held in an upright position by a nut 17 engaging the screw-threaded end of the rod.
The paper to be cut is placed upon the sheetmetal plate, one edge resting against the straight-edge. The cutting-blade is then adjusted transverse of the board to the proper width of strip to be out. With one hand grasping the handle 9, the thumb of the other hand resting upon the plate 16, the cutter is moved in the lengthwise direction of the groove 5, thereby revolving the cutting-wheel in contact with the paper and severing it. When the cutter is not in use, the wheel rests on the projecting section 18 of the board, thereby not interfering with the use of the board for pasting.
I claim as my invention- 1. A paper-trimmer comprising a support, a rod movable in connection with the support and having a lengthwise groove, a handle having a connection with the support and. a screw-threaded extension adapted to enter the grgove, and a cutter-wheel revoluble on the r0 a 2. A paper-trimmer comprising a support, a non-revoluble rod having a sliding connection with the support and having a lengthwise groove, a handle having a connection with the support and a screw-threaded extension adapted to enter the groove, and a cuttingwheel revoluble on the rod. 3. A paper-trimmer comprising asupport, a non-revoluble rod having a sliding connection with the support and means for clamping the parts together, a cutting-wheel revoluble on the rod, and a thumb-rest clamped in connection with the rod by a nut.
