Be it known that I, ELIJAH S. BUCKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Berlin, in the county of Chenango and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Belt-Joints, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to belt-joints, the object in view being to provide a simple, cheap, effective, and reliable joint or connection by means of which the endsv or extremities of a driving-belt may be rmly secured together in the same plane.
The parts of the joint are so constructed and related to each other that they may be quickly applied to the extremities of the belt and rmly secured thereto ina short space of time.
With the above and other objects in view the invention. consists in theV novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts,
which will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated, and claimed.

The member 1 is provided with a central Vclosed slot 3, while the material of said member along one side of the slot is chamfered, as shown at 4. The slot 3 is approximatelyT equal to or greater than onehalf of the length of the member 1. The member 2 is of the same size as the member 1; but instead of a single central closed slot the member 2 is provided with oppositely-arranged open slots 5, or, in other words, slots which open out at the sides of the member 2; The
side walls of the slots 5 are chamfered, as shown at 6, to correspond with the chami'ered edge '4 of the slot 3. By providing the open slots 6 an intermediate neck 7 is left between the slots. This neck is adapted to be received in and passed through the closed slot 3 of the member 1 in the manner illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The joint members are preferably composed of leather or other similar flexible and tough material, which will enable the corner portions of the member 2 to be folded in such position as to adapt them to be passed through the slots 3 of the member l. In this way the two members are associated and brought into the relation illustrated in Figs. l and 2, thereby forming two sets of parallel leaves 8 and 9, `between which the extremities l0 of the belt are placed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and secured rmly by means of rivets 11.v Said rivets may be of any usual or preferred form, those shown being of the split type, which are clenched, as shown at 12,
against the reverse side of the joint members from which the rivets are entered.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying illustration it will be seen that the extremities of the belt lie in alinement. It will also be seen that by reason of the fact that the joint members 1 and 2 intersect each other any tensile strain brought to bearv on the belt will tend to force the central portions of the members 1 and 2 more closely together and in Contact with the extremities of the belt. One or more rows of rivets may be passed through each set of parallel leaves 8 and 9, according to the strain to which the driving-belt may be subjected in use.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- The combination with -the meeting ends of a belt, of a belt-joint composed of two strips of iiexible material havingequal dimensions, the one strip being formedv with transverse slots extending partially thereover and opening out through the opposite side edges thereof, said slots being in alinement to form inwardly-foldable end members, and the other strip having a slot located in the center thereof and extending transversely of the same, the the said oppositely-projecting portions of the latter slot being equal in length to the distance joint to the belt ends. 10 between the inner terminal of the slots in the In testimony whereof I aliiX my signature in first-named strip and adapted to have the foldpresence of two witnesses.
