PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. PARKER, OF BREMERTON, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO CHARLES H. GAFFNER, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
WEATHER-STRIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 752,355, dated February 16, 1904;.
Application filed Eweptember 30, 1903. Serial No. 175,147. (No model.)
To all whom it nearly concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. PARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bremerton, in the county of Kitsap and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Weather-Strips, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to weather-strips, and particularly to the application of such devices upon doors.
The object of the invention is to provide an efficient device of this character of simple and inexpensive construction, which will be raised clear of the floor when the door to which it is applied is opened and pressed down upon the door-sill into operative position coincident with the closing of the door.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and wherein similar letters designate corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a weather-strip embodying my invention, which is shown secured in place upon a door with the front of the containing-case thereof removed. Fig. 2 is a perspectiveview of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged vertical sections taken on line as w of Fig. 1 and showing, respectively, the part-s in operative and'inoperative positions.
The letter a designates a base-plate adapted to be fixedly secured, as by screws 72, to the bottom rail D of a door and having at its extremities rectangular bends c c, which provide ends for a containing-case, to which the front or shield portion 0? thereof is secured by screws engaging in apertures e, and which is likewise fastened directly to the door by screws, such as f.
g is a plate slidably secured against the said base-plate by screws h, passed through vertically-arranged slots h therein, and having along its lower edge a resilient gasket 2', made, preferably, of rubber tubing.
iris a rod supported in a plurality of brackets Z, integral with the base-plate and which may advantageously be punched therefrom, so as to project outwardly, as shown in the drawings. Arms m and n are rigidly attached to the said rod, the former being arranged to be in the same plane, and are pivotally connected adjacent their outer ends by hangers 0 to the said movable plate, whereloy it is raised or lowered' when the rod is given apartial rotation, as will presently be described. The arm a, which is upon the extremity of the rod and outside of end 0 of the case, is positioned so as to be impinged by the jarnb of the door-casing when the door is shut thereagainst and cause the said rod-to rotate and force the resilient gasket carried by the sliding member into operative or compressed contact with the door-sill. A spiral spring p is provided to surround the said rod and is connected, respectively, at its opposite ends to the rod and 7 to the casing thereof and arranged to normally retain the gasket in its raised or disengaged position, which it will obviously do as soon as the door has been opened suificiently to move the actuating-arm n out of its engagement' with the door-jamb.
The operation of the invention is evident from the foregoing specification and needs no further description here. It may be mentioned, however, that the device accomplishes the purposes for which intended in a simple and positive manner and, having few parts, does not easily get out of order, and is entirely automatic in its action. It will close the opening beneath the door to which it is applied, so 5 that air and water can find no passage therethrough. It does not wipe along the floor as the door is swung and is operative as a weather strip only while the door is closed.
Having described my invention, what I 9 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the character described, in combination, a containing-case, a rod extending lengthwise of the casing and rotatably mounted in supports integral of the casing, arms fixedly secured to the said rod and connected by hangers with a movable plate, said movable plate provided along its lower edge I with an elastic gasket, a spring adapted to raise the said plate, and another arm integrally secured to the end of the said rod and exteriorly of the case.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE L. PARKER.
