"PORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
srncrrrcarrbn forming part of Letters Patent n 752,277, dated. February is, 1904:.
Application filed June 10,1903.
To albwhom it may concern: 1 H I Be it known that I, Hannr T ANDERSON, a resident of Avalon,in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylyania,haveinvented a new and useful Improvementin Brake-Beams;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof. Y
My inventionrelates to brake-beams for railway-cars; and its object-is to providenadevice of this character which is simpleand.
cheap to manufacture and which is very strong.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurei is;
' thereof. 'Fig. 4: is a transverse sectionon the by having the back edgestraightand' the for? g ward end tapering in both directions from the; I 1 middle toward the ends; ,but'ob'yiously both? H c shaped members placed back to back with their ticai forces and'with a minimum amounton weight of metab For lightness the webssare cut out, as at 7, toremove superfluous imetal,
lot pressed plate metal.
line 4: a, Fig. 1; andFig. 5. is asimilar section on the iinei5 5, Fig. i, I
The larake-beam is composedof' two channel-shaped members 1, which are similar in construction and which preferably are formed These inembers'are pla.oetig,"preferably, back to-backth at is, with theirwebs toward each other and in contact and are secured by means of rivets 3, passing through their webs. Preferably these mem hers are of varying width,as shown, tapering from their middle toward their ends, and a.
portion at the extreme ends, as at 5, is straight or provided with parallel edges. The ta per: ing eiiect, as shown in the drawings, is secured and-thebeem', in efi'ect,.i s av truss.
;At.the ends the channel members are-spread apart; as'indicated at 8, brake-shoe Serial n. 160,884. on nodal.)
heads 9 areprovided with projections 10, hav- -'ing parallel top and bottom walls, which fit in betweentheen'ds of the channel-members and are secured therebetween by rivets or TARD STEEL CAR COMPANY, "on PITTSBURG, PENn sYLvl'i-Nnn a. coin bolts 1-2, passing through thewebsof the channel members and through suitablea-holcs in the projections 10. At the center of the to form a space for receiving the projection 14 of the brake-lever fulcrum 15, which also r is secured in place by means of rivets or bolts 16, passing through the webs of thechannel members and holes in the projection lei. By
' the arrangement shown the brake-shoe heads and brake-lever fulcrum can be secured to the beam by very simple connections.
The brake-beam 15 simple of manufacture,
v as the two c'hannel members being exact duplicates of each other can be struck up in dies,
and the castings for the brake-shoe heads and brake-lever fulcrum are of simple form, and all parts can be readily. and easily attached vtogether by merely driving rivets straight through the Webs of the channel members and through the projections of the castings.
Width of the webs or of-the flanges, or both. of
the" channel members.
What Ijclaim as my invention; and desire to nre"b3-" Letters Patent, is. A brake-beam composed of two channel to backwith their webs in contact and secured together, and a brake-lever fulcrum and brake shoe heads secured to said members.
I A brake-beam composed of two channelshaped members having one edge straight and ,therothe'r edge tapered from the middletoward *both ends, said members being placed vback to back with their Webs in contact, means fonse- The "finished beam is Very light and possesses a highdegree of strength. It can be made of. any desired strength by merelyv varying the ing placed back to back with their webs in con-,
tact, means for securing said members together, and a brake-lever fulcrum and brakeshoe heads secured to said members.
5,. A brake-beam composed of two channel- I shaped members provided with flanges of varying depth, and means for securing said members together.
6. Abrake-beam composed of two channelshaped membersof varying width and providedwith flanges of varyingdepth, said members' being placed back to back, and means for securing the same together.
7. ,A brakebeam composed of two channelshaped members secured together and having their ends separated or spread apart, and brake-shoe heads secured between the ends of said members. a 8. A brake-beam composed of 'two channelshaped members placed back to back, brake-' shoe heads provided with parallekfaced projections placed betweensaid 'members, and rivets or the like extending through said channel-shaped members and openings in the brake-shoe heads. v 9. A brake-beam composed of two channelshaped members placed. back 'to back and, spread apart at their middle portions, and a brake-lever fulcrum having a projection secured between said members at the spreadshaped members placed back to back, a brakelever fulcrum provided with aprojection having parallel faces and inserted "betweenthe 1 channel-shaped members, and rivets or the like passing through the webs of said channelshaped me'mbersand openings in the brakelever fulcrum.
11. A brake-beam composed of two channelshaped members placedwith their backs toward each other, brake-shoe heads and abrakelever fulcrum provided with projections hav- 1 ing parallel faces, said projections being placed between said channel-shaped members, and rivets or the like passing through the 'webs' of said channel-shaped members and through openings in said projections.
12. A brake-beam composed of two channelshaped members placed back to back, said members being spread apart at their ends and also at their middle portions, brake-shoe heads and a lever-fulcrumprovided with projections having parallel faces and inserted between the spread-apart portions of said members, and rivets or the like passing through the webs of said members and openings in said projections.
In testimony whereof I, the said HARRY 'l.
ANDERSON, have hereunto set my hand.
