SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 752,260, dated February 16, 1964i.
Application filed June 27, 1903. Serial No; 163,419 (No modeL) .To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HIRAM EDWARD REED, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented new and useful-Improvements in Vises,-of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vises; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof, as will be hereinafter fully described, and set forth in the claims.

A marks the base of the vise, from which extends a swivel-pesto. The vise-frame B has a swivel-socket t, which is-designed to operate on the post a, and thus permit the vise to be swung on the. swivel formed by the post a and swivel-socket 6. The upper end of the frame B is provided with a swivel-socket Z), the axis of which issubstantiaily horizontal. The shank cof the relatively fixed jaw G fits in the socket b and permits thervise-jaws to be swung on the horizontal axis. The ends of tion-surfaces 6 and b the frame forming the socket 6' form the fric- The shank (Z of the movable jaw D slides in the shank c of the fixed jaw. The screw E is provided with a shoulder e, which engages the movable jaw in the usual manner and operates through a nut F. The screw-shank is provided with the usual handle 6 and the shank d is reinforced by the sleeve or pipe D.
The nut F has the yoke f, which extends through slots (2 in the shank d of the movable jaw and is secured to a friction-ring f. The
friction-ring f is secured to' the shank c by the screws f These screws are not, however,
set-up sufiiciently tight to bring the frictionring f into close engagement with the frie tion-surface t. On the end ofithe screw E is arranged a cap 6 .This is secured to the end of the screw by the pin c. It engages the end of the shank d, its purpose being to 5 compel the movable jaw D to follow the screw as, the screw is run out, or, in other Words, to open the movable jaw. The yoke F, acting on'the sides of the slot at, holds the-jaw D in register with the jaw C. This is especiallyadvantageous when the shank d is round, as shown.
It will be noted that when the vi se is closed and pressure; exerted on the fixed jaw G and nut F the part of the frame forming the socket is clamped between the surface 0 and set sufiiciently tight to create enough friction to hold the parts in any position to which the jaws may be adjusted while the screw E is being operated. If desired, the jaws of the v I vise may be locked against turning on this horizontal pivot by means of the pin'f which is arranged in the friction-ring f and enters the socket 12*.
-I prefer that the locking of the swivel-joint formed on the post a should also be accomplished automatically by the setting of the screw E. To this end I have provided the upper end of the base with the groove c and have arranged the block G in the opening 6 in the wall of the socket b, so as to register with the post along the groove 0 The block G protrudes slightly beyond the surface 6 and is therefore subjected to the pressure of the clamping-ring when the jaws of the vise are set. This brings the inner 'end of the block Gr, which is in the form of a segment and adapted to fit in the groove a into close frictional engagement with the post a, so that the vise is thus automatically locked against swinging on the base a.
