To a/ZZ whom it may concern;-
Be it known that I, Renner R. SMITH, av citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, inthe county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Door-Check, of which the following is a specication. j This invention relates to door-checks or dedoors when partly open in any desired position, so as not 'to be blown shut by 'wind or closed by means of springs, with which they may be provided; and it has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity,durability,and general eiciency.
With these and other ends in view my inventin consists in the Improved construction, ar-
rangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and 'particularly pointed out in theclaims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view showing a part of a door to which my invention has been applied, the view including the operating mechanism and part of the connecting means of the device. A reverse-movement will restore the cam and the lever to the position shown in full lines.

When it shall be desired to retain the door in an open or partly-open position, a single turn in the opposite direction of the handle 19 will bring the hook 5 of the cam into engagement with the stub 16, which acts as a stop, while, the lever 5 being relieved from the support of the cam, the spring 31 will force the plug 36, having the cap 38, in a downward direction and into engagement with the ioor, thereby securely holding the door in the partly or entirely open position to which it mayhave been adjusted. y I 1 In order to connect my improved device 0peratively with the door, the latter is first prepared for its reception by forming a mortise at the proper place for the reception of the casing 1 and next forming the bore 22 from the lower edge of the door in an upward di- .ticed that the uppermost link is somewhat longer than the remaining links. This is necessary only in order to provide for the proper engagement of the uppermost link with the lever 5, as will be presently described. The

which is made of suflicient length to engage a l considerable length of tl1`e`rod 28, which, however, is unscrewed as far as possible *without disconnecting it from the yoke. rlhe plug 36, which, with the cap 38, which is cemented or otherwise suitably secured thereto, constitutes the bolt, is connected with the lower end of the r0d 28, and these parts, together with the spring 31, may now easily be lassembled in the two-part cylinder, which latter is properly secured in the recess 23, provided for its reception. The rods and links are pushed upwardly through the bore 22 until the uppermost link may be'caught at the inner end of the mortise f provided for the reception of the casing 1. The links 22 will -enable the uppermost link to be brought out through the mortise, as shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings, when it may be readily connected with the hook 6 of the Alever 5, the casing 1 beingheld in close proximity to the edgeof the door in the meanwhile. The said casing is then inserted into the socket, /thus causing the bolt to be pressed outwardlyfrom the casing bythe spring 31. The said bolt is now by the use of the fingersor by some suitable tool turned from left to right, thus causing the screw-threaded portion 32 of the rod 28 to pass into the yoke 34 at the lower end of the rod 35 and enabling the desired adjustment to be made-that is, permitting the necessary portion of the bolt to protrude belovvr the lower edge of the door. This' adjustment, of course, may be readily ascertained, and it may be made more or less effective, according to the size and weight of the door to which the device isapplied.
