Description

To all whom, it may concern,.-
VUNITED STATES I Patented February 2, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
VvJOSEPH SOHALL, OF EVERGREEN PARK, ILLINOIS.V
BUILDING-TILE.-
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 751,346, dated February 2, 1904. Application filed April 23, 1903. Serial No. 153,970. (No model.)
Be it known that I, J osErH SCHALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evergreen Park, in the county of Cook and State of- Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Building-Tiles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a f ull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel construction in a building-tile, the object being to provide a tile having embedded therein suitable devices to enable the lath or expanded metal receiving the plaster to be secured directly thereto and which will provide the desired airspaces between the plaster and the main wall or partition of a room; and it consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure l is a fragmentary view in perspective, partly in section, of a wall or partition constructed of tile in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2. is a fragmentary horizontal section of a partitionconstructed of tile in accordance with my invention. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a slightly-modified form of tile constructed in accordance with my in vention. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. l.
My invention consists, primarily, in providing a building-tile for Walls and partitions ofl buildings on one vor both faces with vertical ribs having embedded therein devices for securing either metal or wood lath thereto to receive the plaster, said ribs being of adepth suliicient to provide ample air-spaces between the plaster wall and the outer or partition wall of the building.
Referring now to said drawings, A indicates the outer wall of abuilding, which is composed of tiles B, each of which is provided with two parallel vertical ribs C equidistant from the ends of the tile and spaced apart a distance equal to double the distance between one end of the tile and the nearest rib, so that in laying said tiles to break joint Vthe ribs C will register and form unbroken vertical ribs the entire height of the wall. Said ribs are preferably of greater 'width at their inner than at their outer ends. Embedded in said tiles and projecting from the free ends of said ribs are metal straps D, which are vbent to form loops and having their free projecting ends preferably lying in close contact with each other,
said straps being adapted to 'pass through openings, provided therefor in the metal lath E or other plaster-supporting devices and then bent over in opposite directions, thereby firmly securing said lath to said ribs. The coat F of plaster covers sai lath and said straps.
Said .ribs O may be of any desired depth to provide the requisite air-spaces between the wall proper and the plaster wall.
In Fig. 2 I have illustrated a wall composedof tiles G, having ribs H on both faces and designed to be used for partitioning the interior of the building.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a tile I coinciding in form with the tiles B, but in place of the projecting metal straps having dovetail-shaped strips J of wood embedded in the free ends of the tile to enable the lath to be secured thereto by means of nails or screws.
Obviously the tiles may be provided with any desired number of ribs and may be either solid or hollow and of any suitable material without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim as my invention- 1. A building-tile provided with one or more ribs, and metallic fastening devices embedded Y 2. Abuilding-tile provided on one face with Y ribs or projections, and devices at the freeends of said ribs or projections for securing lath thereto, said devices being embedded in said` tile when in its plastic state and being enlarged at their inner ends to prevent loosening of said devices without breaking the tile.
In testimony whereof I affix my slgnature inA presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH SOHALL.
