Be it known that I, JOSEPH T. DAILEY, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Boots, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

This invention relates to attachments for boots; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.

The object of this invention is to provide an attachment for boots and leggings whereby vines, &c., can be cut when any person wearing the attachment passes through them.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a boot, showing my attachment connected thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front view of a part of the attachment. Fig. 3 is a view showing a modifled form.

My invention consists in applying to the front side of the boot or legging one or more sections of metallic plates provided with teeth or cutting edges whereby the vines, &c., may readily be. cut or broken when any person walks through them with the attachment. In the form shown a long plate 1, provided on its forward edge with a number of teeth, is attached to the front of the boot by means of the projecting portions 2, which bear against the outer surface of the boot and are secured thereto by rivets or similar fastening devices. These devices may be made of any length to extend to the top of or above the boot and preferably terminate, as shown, near the instep. A short independent section 3 is attached to the instep of the boot and is provided in its upper end with a curved slot 4, and the lower end of the section 1 is also provided with a curved slot 5. The ends of the sections 1 and 3 overlap, and a screw-bolt or similar device 6 passes through these slots, and thereby connects the two sections together, but permits the instep of the boot to bend freely, as required in walking. The lower end of the section 3 is also provided with a slot 5 similar.

to the slot 4: and is pivotally connected to another section, 7, the bolt 8 passing through the slot 5 and through the slot 9, formed in the said section 7, which is secured to the vamp of the boot. The different sections are secured to the boot independently and are pivotally connected together, so that they will cause no obstruction to the person in walking.

In Fig. 3 I have shown a modified form, wherein the section 10 is provided with a number of lateral projections 11, the said projections having slots 12 formed therein, through which the straps 13 may be passed to hold the attachment in position.

I have shown these plates or metallic sections provided with teeth serving the functions of saws, so that as the feet are raised and lowered in walking the vines, &c., will be readily cut and broken; but it is manifest that the edges may be sharp cutting edges, or other arrangement may be made, the form shown being merely the preferred construction.

I claim 1. An attachment for boots or leggings, consisting of a number of sections provided with cutting edges applied to the front and top of the boot, and means consisting of curved slots in the overlapping ends of the sections, and bolts passing through the slots for connecting the sections together so that the instep of the boot may bend without obstruction when worn, substantially as specified.

2. An attachment for boots and leggings, consisting of a number of metallic sections provided with cutting edges and having lateral projections, means for connecting the projections to the boot or legging, means consisting of curved slots in the overlapping ends of the sections, and bolts passing through the slots for connecting the different sections together, whereby the said sections will be moved when the boot or legging is bent in walking, substantially as specified.
