CHECK-VALVE AND CObPERATlNG PARTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 750,082, dated January 19, 1 904.

Be it known that we, WILLIAM BOEKEL and JULIUS BoEKEL, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia,in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Valves and Cooperating Parts; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The chief object of this invention is to produce an improved check-valve for use with air-pumps employed with nebulizers, though said valve is applicable to pumps of any kind or to other devices wherein fluid-pressure is to be restrained and an absolute'closure of the valve without leakage is required.
To this end the said invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical central section taken transversely to the fastening-plate through an air-pump and air-tank provided with devices embodying our invention and chiefly intended for use with a nebulizer, not shown. Fig. 2 represents a detail section on the same plane and, on a larger scale, through the central part of the base-plate. Fig. 3 represents a detail perspective view of the valve-shell and valvedisks on a larger scale than Fig. 1 and slightly separated. Fig. 4: represents an enlarged detail perspective view of the base-plate, taken from above. Fig. 5 represents a similar view of the same and of the fastening-plate, taken from below and slightly separated.
A designates the cylindrical shell of a vertical tank, and B the concentric inclosed but longer cylinder of an air-pump having a piston C and piston-rod C, preferably hand-operated by means of a handle D. The head of this cylinder is provided with air-inlet holes Z). The upper part of said tank is provided with a lateral outlet E, which may be coupled to a nebulizer, (left unshown, as having no necessary connection with the present invention.)
' F designates a base-plate, preferably cast of tin, antimony, and lead, or some similar alloy Serial No. 168,326. (No model.)
of natural polish needing no subsequent polishing work and hard enough for safe soldering and durability, while adapted to be cast without intense heat. This base-plate has a central block or hub G raised on it to fit within the lower end of the said cylinder; also, an annular horizontal shoulder or ledge F to receive the lower edge of the said tank just with the position of the apparatus as a Whole will be horizontal instead of the vertical position shown. In'either case it will be easily attached and as easily removed, the shape of plate H and the walls of the groove permit- The said base-plate is provided I ting the said base-plate to slip easily into or out of locking position, with all it carries.
This groove produces a corresponding offset on the upper side of the said base-plate, the segmental spaces f f on each side thereof being depressed or hollow to lighten the plate.
The pump piston C drives the air out of cylinder B through a fine outlet-bore G in the center of hub G to a recess I of the latter, which receives the valve-shell J and is screwthreaded in part at c' to receive the corresponding screw threads j of the said valveshell near its screw head, which closes the opening of the latter into groove F being flush with the upper Wall or top of the latter when in place. Besides this head and the annular outer screw threaded part the said valve shell consists of several inwardly -'extending parts J, integral with said annular part, but divided by longitudinal slots m, extending from their inner ends as far as said annular part, and are also recessed externally to form a broad annular groove 12 just above said annular part about the middle of the shell broken only by said slots. When the valve-' shell is in its place in hub G of base-plate F, the wall of the recess I makes with the said slots on and groove n a series of longitudinal passages supplied by bore G and an annular passage supplied by these longitudinal passages and discharging through a side outlet Z of hub G and a registering hole or opening Z in the lower part of cylinder B into the interior of tank or air-reservoir A, whence it passes through the outlet first above mentioned. The number of the longitudinal passages formed by slots m insures a free flow of air,and the annular form of groove it avoids all risk of not making perfect connection with the side outlet Z. The said parts J are provided on their inner faces a little distance above said annular groove with shoulders J,
which collectively form an annular support with slight intervals for an aluminium valvedisk 0 and a rubber valve-disk P resting thereon, these disks constituting the valve proper, though the valve may be considered as comprising also the above-described shell. The combination of a rigid disk with a flexible one is important, since the latter effectually closes the joint when forced against its seat, while the former adds strength and keeps the valve in shape.
The valve seat Q is the upper end of the recess I aforesaid, and in it is made the bore or air-passage Gr. When the downward pressure of piston C is relaxed, the back pressure of the air in tank A through passages Z n m bearing against aluminium disk 0 forces the rubber disk P against said seat, absolutely closing the inner bore G and preventing all pressure against the lower side of the piston, which remains locked by the pressure of the air above it.
If the parts have been accurately shaped and drilled, there will be no leakage and no back pressure on the piston. To effect this,we have designed and employed a special drillin g-tool for the screw-threaded recess I, which forms the valve-seat, and for the bore G communicating therewith.
A valve and seat such as described are of general application wherever it is necessary to check the back pressure of fluids; but we have illustrated them as used with an airpump and find them particularly valuable with the air-pumps of nebulizers.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Acheck-valve consisting of a valve-shell having an annular external groove and longitudinal slots connected therewith and a diskform valve proper, resting on an inner shoulder of said shell, in combination with a part which is recessed to fit tightly the exterior of the said shell, forming therewith an annular passage and longitudinal passages and having also an inlet passage or bore through the valveseat formed by said recessed part and an outlet from the said annular passage substantially as set forth.
2. A check-valve consisting of a disk-form valve proper and a valve-shell having an annular external groove, an externally-screwthreaded part and longitudinal slots connecting with the said groove and being also provided with an internal shoulder for the said valve proper, in combination with a part recesscd to fit the body of said valve-shell,screw threaded to engage the screw-threads thercof and provided with a seat for said valve proper, an inlet through said seat and an outlet substantially as set forth.
3. A valve-shell provided with an internal shoulder, slots or passages extending from the inlet end of said shell beyond the said shoulder and an external groove connected with the said slots, in combination with a valve supported by said shoulder and a part recessed to fit said shell and form a seat for said valve, the said part being also provided with an inlet through the said valve-seat and an outlet from the space formed by the said groove substantially as set forth.
4. A valve-shell provided with an internal shoulder and inletand outlet passages in combination with an inclosing part cooperating to form said passages and provided with a valve-seat and an inlet through the same and a valve proper consisting of two disks, one rigid and resting on the same, the other flexible and arranged for immediate contact with the seat substantially as set forth.
