SAMUEL STROBA, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPLIT PULLEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 749,756, dated January 19, 1904. Application filed July 29, 1903. Serial No. 167,442. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL STROBA, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Split Pulleys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanyin g drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in split pulleys, and relates more particularly to that class of pulleys which are adapted to be parted in order that they may be placed upon a shaft at any point without reference to the ends of the shaft; and it has for its object to provide a pulley both halves of which may be cast from the same pattern.
My invention further aims to provide the halves of the pulley with interlocking parts both at the hub and rim portions of the pulley, thereby assuring safety, strength, and durability; furthermore, to provide a pulley that will be extremely simple in its construction, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient in its use.
' With the above and other objects in View my invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved split pulley, showing the interlocking halves connected together. Fig. 2 is a similar view of one of the halves. thereof. interlocking half.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 represents the one half of the pulley, and the other or interlocking half is denoted by the numeral 2. The rim portion of the pulley is enlarged at the joint, as shown at 3, and provided with a tongue 4, and a corresponding groove 5 is formed in the other half. Each half of the pulley is provided with a tongue Fig. 3 is a front view- Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the other and groove which extends in opposite directions. Each half of the hub 6 carries a dovetail 7 having a straight face 8. The halves of the hub have formed therein corresponding openings 9 to receive the dovetails. A set-screw 10 extends through the hub, and I may place two or more set-screws in the hub in order to maintain the concentric relation of the pulley to the shaft.
It is to be noted that the upper and lower faces of the tongues 7 are curved or somewhat concave, while the side walls of the grooves 9 are convex to conform thereto. The tongues A are substantially in the form of a half-dovetail, and as one tongue iand one tongue 8 is formed on each section, together with one groove 9 and one groove 5, it will be observed that the same mold may be employed for casting the sections.
The manner of connecting and disengaging the halves will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A split pulley comprising a hub, rim, and connecting-spokes, and being formed in two sections, each section having one end of its rim formed with an enlargement extending beyond said end, said extended portion of said enlargement being formed with a groove, tongues formed on the inner faces of the opposite ends of said rim-sections adapted to fit into the grooves of the adjacent enlargements, and
i dovetail extensions, one being carried by each hub-section and said extensions being received in correspondingly-shaped grooves formed in the opposite sections.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL STROBA.
