Be it known that I, 'WiLLm Ml, Knoma citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bull and Calf W'heel Gudgeons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates in general to the class of Well drilling machinery and apparates, and especially to the bull wheels and calf-whcels of the derrick.
My invention consists in a novel construction of the hubs, usually termed gud: geons of the calf-wheel and of the bull wheel both with respect to its tug-wheel member and its halite-wheel member.
These wheels comprise a gudgeon or hub secured on a shaft, a plurality of ari'ns extending, usually, tangentially to the axis of the gudgeon, and rims composed of eants carried by the extremities of the arms.
The object of my invention is to provide a construction of the gudgeons of these wheels, which will give the maximum strength and resistance to strains in the as sembled wheels, and willprovid'e for convenient access to the bolts which secure'the arms in the channels of the gudgeons, enabling said arms to be fitted, replaced and tightened as required.
Referring to the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is an elevation of the bull-wheel comprising the tug-Wheel and the brake wheel member. Fig. 2 is an outer face View, broken, of either member, Fig; 3 is a vertical sectional View partly in elevation, enlarged, of the gudgeon of the wheel, taken at right angles to its axis, on the line 3-43 of Fig. 5. Fig. 4: 1s a section of the same on the line H of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the same.
Though my invention is equally app1icable to calf-Wheels, and bull-wheels, I have herein deemed it necessary to show only the bull-wheel comprising both tugwheel member and b eke-wheel member, as my improved construction is the same in both members and in the calfwheel.
The gudgeon is a casting comprising spaced sides 1, between which areequidistant webs 2 tangential to the axis and a journal 3 with a flange l. These parts are one in} tegral casting.

at :5 slightly above. the face surface of each web 2-, the openings being preferably onv alternate sides thereby avoiding weakening of the casting. From one side to the other ofthearm channels thus formed, and above said channels are the'brztees 6 integral with the casting. These braces are curved upwardly to the openings 5, and together with said openings they provide ample space to reach the arm channels.
Atthe base or inner end of each channel, there is formed in the casting a cross piece 7 which provides a socket for the inner end of the arm.
8 are the arms, in any suitable number, in practice, eight. The inner end of the arm is fitted in the channel, its extremity entering the socket formed by the cross piece 7. Bolts 9 pass through the arm into the web 2. These bolts are easy to reach, through the openings 5 and the curved braces 6, thereby insuring facility in fitting, replacing and tightening the-arms. In addition to the bolts, the arms, thus fitted, are adapted to bear the imposed strains, by reason of the underlying webs 2, the sides '1, and the cross pieces 7, which together form channels in which said arms are closely fitted. The bolts 9, therefore, have little or no 'strainplaced upon them, and have no other function than to hold against outward linear movement, thus presenting a'decided advantage over the common practice of using the arm holding bolts for also securing the gudgeon to the shaft.
In the present case, the shaft 10 passes into the axis of'the gudgeon, and the latter is secured to it by the rivets 11, through the journal flange 4.

I claim 1. A bull or calf-wheel gudgeon comprising a casting having spaced sides with openings, spaced webs between said sides, and cross pieces forming sockets at the web bases, said sides, webs and cross pieces forming channels in which rim-carrying arms are adapted to be fitted and to be bolted to the webs.

A bull or calf-wheel 'gudgeon "comprising a casting having spaced sides with openings, spaced webs between said sides, cross pieces forming sockets at the web bases, cross braces between the sides under the outer edge of the webs, and a flanged journal 'on one of the sides, said sides, webs, cross pieces, and braces forming accessible channels in. which rim-carrying arms are adapted to befitted and to be bolted to the webs, and said flanged journal formiiw a hearing by which the gudgeon is riveted to a carrying shaft. 7 a
4. A bull or calf-wheel gudgeon comprising a casting having spaced sides, equidistant webs between said sides, cross pieces forming sockets at'the web bases, and cross braces between the sides under the outer edge of the webs, said sides having a cut out portion at opposite sides of alternate webs, said out out sides, webs, cross pieces and braces forming accessible channels in which rim-carrying arms are adapted to be fitted and to be bolted to the webs.
5. A bull or calf-wheel structure comprising a gudgeon casting with spaced sides, having openings, spaced webs between said sides and cross pieces forming sockets at the web bases, said webs, sides and sockets I forming arm-receiving channels; arms fitted in said channels; bolts securing the arms to the webs; and a rim carried by said arms. 6. A bull or calf-whee1 structure comprising a gudgeon casting with spaced sides having openings, spaced webs between said sides, cross pieces forming sockets at the web bases, and cross braces under the outer edge of each web, said sides, webs, cross pieces and braces forming accessible arm receiving channels; arms fitted in said channels; bolts securing the arms tothe webs; and a rim carried by the arms;
