H. -H. THO'RP.
PULLBY. No. 393,041. Patented Nov. 20, 1888.
NirE` STATES;
HENRXT H. THoEP, or CLEVELAND, omo.
PULLEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part-of Letters Patent No. 393,041, dated November 20, 1888.
Application filed October 18, 1886. Serial No. 216,488.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. THORP, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulleys; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in pulleys; audit consists, broadly, iu providing a pulley with a removable metallic band formed in a single piece, all as shown and de scribed, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure l represents a side elevation of a sectional pulley with my improved form of band attached. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the band alone.
Referring to Fig. 1, a a represent the respective sections of a form of split pulley embodying my invention. In this view are shown two sections suitably cored to form the bore of the hub, and having flanges a a', through which the sections are bolted together, and rims c3 integral therewith, which form the pe riphery of the wheel.
b b' and c c represent inwardly-projecting lugs cast integral with the rim c3 on the opposing edges of the respective sections. The faces of these lugs are dat; but the lugs b b are beveled from their inner extremity toward the periphery of the wheel, substautially as shown'in Fig. l, so that when the sections are brought together the lugs will lform a fulcrum for tightening the band, as hereinafter described.
If preferred, the lugs b b may be provided with circular faces instead of straight ones, and act on the principle of a cam. The lugs c c', on the contrary, come closely together when the sections are united, and have transverse diagonal slots cZ c2 near their upper corners. These lugs need onlybe large enough to enable me to cut the slots cl therein.
D represents a metallic band, preferably made of steel, although other suitable sheet metal may be used. This band is formed in a single piece of any desired width and proI (No model.)
vided with inwardlyturned ends d cl,adapted to occupy the slots c2 0*.
Different forms of wheels might be adopted and be within the scope of my invention, as the construction of the Wheel is not material, provided it be adapted to receive and hold my improved form` of band. It will be seen that the slots c c' are so arranged in relation to one another that when the band is secured therein and the bolts of the wheel tightened the shoulders on the bent ends d d are brought into contact and serve to lock each other from release, thus eftectually holding the band on the wheel and preventing its accidental displacement While the bolts are in position.
The precise means of securing the band here described need not be followed, as others may suggest themselves; but I prefer this method because it is cheap aud'convenient and requires no ext-ra bolts or attachments.
By constructing a pulley on the principle herein described and having a band that is easily and quickly removed I am enabled to use different widths of band as Well as different forms thereof-such as crown-bands and straight bands-on the same pulley. This affords a great saving in the number of pulleys that otherwise would be necessary, as well as much time and labor in changing them upon the shaft.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
I. Apulley having independent inwardlyprojecting lugs at one side, with the faces of the lugs set directly opposite eachother, in combination with a band secured to the pulley at its ends and adapted to be tightened on the pulley by the spreading of the outer faces of the lugs, substantially as set forth.
2. A pulley formed in two sections having independent lugs at one side which form fulcrums for said sections when drawn together, in combination With a band secured to the pulley-sections at one side and adapted to be tightened ou the pulley by the spreading ot' the outer faces of the lugs in bringing said pulley-sections together, substantially as set forth.
3. A pulley formed in two sections, each having inwardly-projecting lugs at opposite sides, the faces of the lugs being directly opposite eaeh other, in combination with a band having its ends bent inwardly and secured in slots in the pulley-sections, the band being tightened bythe spreading of the outer faces of one set of lugs and the other set of lugs posing lugs being in the same plane and the faces of the other lugs in different planes as to each other, substantially as set forth.
5. A sectional pulley provided with fulcrumlugs at one side and binding lugs for the sections,v and the band on the opposite side, in combination with a band, substantially as set tightly secured together, substantially as set forth. forth. HENRY H. THORP.
NVitnesses:
4. In a sectional pulley, two corresponding l sections, each having two lugs opposite one another, the meeting faces of one set of opl H. T. FISHER, WVM. M. MONROE.
