SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,935, dated October 25, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. LOCK- STAEDT,asubject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Chicago, in the county of'Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SplitPulleys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a novel construction in split pulleys, the objects being to provide a metallic pulley that can be easily applied and removed from the shaft, and to pro- Vide a metallic split pulley that is true and that can be made in an inexpensive manner.
The invention consists in the features of construction and combinations 0f parts hereinafterfully described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pulley constructed in accordance with my invention before the block is secured in place. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the block in place. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional View on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the pulley finished and'secured to a shaft. Fig. 6 is a detail side elevation of the block.
Referring to said drawings, A indicates as a whole the pulley, and B the block. The said pulley embraces a rim 1, a hub 2, single spokes 3, and double spokes 4 and 5, the latter being arranged diametrically opposite each other. The double spokes 4 are located parallel with each other and are joined to the hub at theirinner ends and to the rim at their outer ends. The said rim 1 is open or discontinued between the outer ends of the spokes 4 to form a recess or open slot 6 between the spokes 4, by means of which the pulley can be placed upon a shaft. The spokes 4 are provided on their inner faces with the lateral anges 7. The block B is adapted to enter the open slot6 of the pulley and consists of a web 8, side flanges 9, the wide rim portion 10, and hub end 11.
In constructing said pulley the pulley proper is molded and the inner faces of the flanges 7 are planed to receive the block B, the outer faces of the flanges 9 of which are also planed, so that said block fits nicely within the open slot 6. Two rabbets 12 are also made in the rim of the pulley at the juncture of the same with the spokes 4, and these rabbets receive the lugs 13 on the outer end of the block B, said rabbets 12 and lugs 13 being planed to fit each other nicely. The block is then fitted in place, with its flanges 9 fitting against the flanges 7 of the pulley and the lugs 13 Within the rabbets 12. The fianges are then bolted together by bolts 14 in an obvious manner. The rim 1 and rimpiece 10 are then trimmed down to make them perfectly true, and the hub 2 and hubpiece 11 of the block turned out to bring it to the right size, as shown in Fig. 5. The pulley is then ready for use and can be taken apart and shipped. It is plainly obvious that when the pulley is to be applied to a shaft it can be easily slipped thereon and the block put in place and secured, which will make a firm and true pulley. It will be noted that if there was a plurality of such pulleys upon a shaft then the double spokes 4 of such pulleys could be located on opposite sides thereof to balance each other; but to insure the balancing of said shaft each pulleyA is preferably provided opposite the double spokes4 with the double spokes 5, before referred to. Near the outer end of said spokes 5 and adjacent the rim is located a weight 15. Said double spokes 5 and weight 15 serve to counterbalance the double spokes 4 and block B. The weight 15 can, furthermore, be reduced by boring holes therein in an obvious manner, so that the two sides of the pulley will balance perfectly.
