HEATING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 749,086, dated January 5, 1904. Application filed July 2, 1903. Serial No. 164.026. (No model.)

Beit known that I, JOHN C. NACE, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ohnetta, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heating Ap paratus, of which improvement the following is a specification. This invention relates to a certain new and useful improvementin heating apparatus, and` relates more particularly to what is known as hot-air furnaces.
The object of this invention is to provide a heating-furnace whereby the entire heat generated by the furnace is utilized.
A further object of this invention is to provide means whereby the loss by radiation is reduced to a minimum.
With the above and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel design, combination, and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure l is a sectional side elevation of my improved heating apparatus, a portion thereof being broken out. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cap-piece. Fig. 4. is a sectional plan through the vertical iiue of the apparatus. Fig. 5 is a sectional plan of the combustion-chamber. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the brick line-support located around the combustion-chamber.
In describing the invention the reference- A numeral 1 indicates the combustion-chamber,
in which the usual grate 2 is provided and the iire-doors 3 and ash-doors 4 are placed upon the furnace, substantially as shown. The upper portion of this chamber l is contracted, as shown at 5, and a plurality of sectional flues 6 are connected with said chamber and placed one above the other. Lugs 7 are placed in the lower inside corners of each section, whereby the said sections are held in alinement, and ribs 8, placed on the outside of said sections, form a means whereby they wall of bricks may be held a proper distance away from said sections, thereby forming an air-space 9 between said sections and the wall l0, formed therearound.
The wall 10 at its lower end is tapered to conform to the shape of the combustionchamber, and the said tapered portion rests on the support 11, which in turn is supported by the offsets formed in the ribs 8 of the combustion-chamber.
The lower end of the air-chamber 9 is connected with any suitable air-supply, which is indicated by the reference-numeral 12. The wall l0 has apertures 14 formed therein at the points of outlet for the heated air, and any suitable form of register or control may be placed therein.
In order that the products of combustion may not rush throughthe flue withoutheatug the air confined therearound, the top of said iiue is partially closed bythe plate l5, the said plate also extending over and closing the airchamber 9.
While I have herein described my invention in detail, it will be obvious that the unit system of construction will permit any extension of the structure andthat various slight changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i In a heating-furnace the combination of a comb ustion-chamber having a contracted upper portion, a plurality of ribs formed on the outer side of said chamber, a plurality of duesections placed one above the other and connecting with the contracted portion of the combustion chamber, a plurality of lugs formed on the end of the flue-sections whereby the dierent sections are connected a plurality of ribs formed on said {lue-sections, a wall formed around the ribs of the due-sections and combustion-chamber, a plate placed over the upper due-section for closing the upper end of the chamber formed between the due-sections and the wall built therearound, an aperture formed in said plate, said aperture being of lesser area than the In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
