SPEGIFGATION forming 'part of Letters Patent No.
SLASTlNGHCARTRlDGE.
748,935, dated January 5, i90/i.
Application filed March 4, i903. Serial No. 146,124. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom. it may concern:
Be it known that i, THOMAS F. DURHAM, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Philedelphie., county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented e certain new and useful Improvement in Blasting Cartridges, which following is e specificetier.
bij. in",v `ntion relates to e. new and useful improvement in Nesting-cartridges, and reletes to that class of cartridges in which the explosive is contained within en innex` tube, which inner tube is inserted in en outer cssing, s. reetinguishing egent,sucl1 es Water, surrounding the inner tube upon ell sides; end the object of this invention is to con struct e. cartridge which may ne molded and have e. tapering or conical end, end the open end of both the outer end inner tube may be sealed by scretwplugs end the fisse or igniting device may pass from the exterior of the outer tube to the interior of the inner tube without going through the side ofi the outer tube.
With these ends in View this invention consiste in the details or" construction and cornbinetion of ele nient-s hereinafter set forth end then speciiicslly designated by the claims.'
in order that those skilled in the srt to which this 'invention spperteins may understand, how to make and use the some, the construction end operation will now be described in detail, referring to the encompanying drawings, forming e part of this speciiicatiou, in Whichii;J ire l is e longitudinal sectional view of e cartridge constructed according to my invention; 2, e pien viewof the cartridge; Fig. 3, e cross-section5 Fig. Li, e. oross-seotion ci the cartridge, showing e modied form of the seme.
A represents the outer tube, which is closed et one end, and this closed end is formed tspering or conical, es represented et A". This conica-ti is for the purpose of allowing the cartridge to oe more easily inserted in the hole drilled in the substance to be blested.
The opposite end of the cuter tube or cylinder A is interiorly threaded, es represented at fr?.
ed, es represented at B. This inner tube is 'adapted to contain the explosive C and is designed to be held at zt distance from the outer tube, tubes is adapted to contain a. fire-extinguish ing agent, such es water, es represented at D. Thesetuloes may be held seperated in any manner; but the ineens which I have shown in the drawings consists oi' e series of projections or ribs E, which are formed with the outer tube and extend inward therefrom, es shown in Figs. l and 3, and for the puriu contact with the tapering orconical end A' of the outer tube I provide the lugs or projections E', formed with and extending inward from the outer tube, upon which the inner tube rests. The open interiorly-thresded ends of both the outer tube end the inner tube are adapted to be closed by screw-threaded plugs F and G, respectively. The open end or mouth of the outer tube is not of the sume di aineter es the body of the tube, but is of sutiln cient diameter to allow for the insertion of the innertuloe. This mouth or open end is formed eccentric to the body of the tube, 'es illustrated upper end of the tube s. shouider H, through which is formed an opening l, sud the fuse passes downward through this opening and through en opening K, provided through Jthe side of the inner tube. Both the openings I and K ere closed around the fuse with soap, glass, or other suitable materiel to prevent leakage. By this construction it will be seen that it is not necessiti-y to forni su opening through the screw-threaded pings for the fuse, and still the fuse may pese to the inner tube without passing-.through the side of the outer tube, for if the fuse did. pass through the side. of the outer tube it might be injured in vinserting the cartridge in the drilled hole, and by this construction the may be inserted before the 'plugs ere placed in the tube.
in 4 l have shown s inodiiicetion wherein the ribs or projections E may be formed conical instead of Wedge shape. Both the inner and outer tubes are designed to be ii eproci' ine* isi, such es s pose of keeping the inner tube from coming;1
in Fig. 2, and this leaves upon one side of the and the space between the two and also to make the tube stronger, so as to cause more resistance, and at the same time to be made at a comparatively small cost.
Of'course do not Wish to be limited to the exact construction here shown, as slight modiformed tapering or conical, an inner tube also closed at one end, the open end of each tube being interiorly threaded, screw-threaded plugs adaptedA to close said open end, the interiorly-threaded mouth of the outer tube being formed eccentric with the body of the tube, the shoulder thus formed upon one side `being provided with an opening extending to the interior of the tube, the inner tube being providedl Withan opening through its side, a fuse adapted to extend from the exterior of the cartridge through said opening to the iuterior of the inner tube, and the holes adapted to be closed around the fuse by a plastic yWaterproof solution, projections extending inward from the outer tube to hold the inner tube at a distance from the outer tube, and projections extendinginward from the conical end of the outer tube upon which the inner tube is adapted to rest3 as and for the purpose specied.
2. In a safetyblasting-cartridge, an outer tube closed at one end, said closed end being formed tapering or conical, an inner tube also closed at one end, means for holding the inner tube at a distance from the outer tube, the open end of each tube being interiorly threaded, sore 'rr-threaded plugs adapted to close said open ends, the interiorly-threaded mouth of the outei` tube being formed eccentric with the body cf the tube, the shoulder thus formed upon one side beine.r provided with an opening extending to the interior of the tube, the inner tube provided with an opening through its side, a fuse adapted to extend from the exterior of the cartridge through said openings to the interi er of the inner tube, and the holes adapted to be closed around the fusev by a plastic Waterproof solution, said inner and outer tubes adapted to be molded from a fireproof substance, as and for the purpose specied.
3. In a safety blasting-cartridge, an inner and outer tube projections extending inward from the outer tube, said lprojections adapted to hold the inner tube at a distance from the outer tube, said inner and outer tube and projections being Inolced from a material composed of a mixture et cement and silica, or like substance, as and for the purpose specied.
ln testimoni,T wherec'i l have hereunto afxed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
