SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 748,370, dated December 90 Application filed August 1,19 3. Serial No. 167,915. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRY L. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Whisk-Brooms, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention is an improvementin brooms, being in the nature of a rubbing attachment for use in removing spots and the like from garments; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as willbe hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved broom. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View showing the several parts detached for purposes of illustration, and Fig. 3 is a detail section on about line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The body A of the broom may be of ordinary construction, and it may be secured to the handle B, of wood or the like, in the usual manner by wiring, for instance, as shown in the drawings. Upon this handle B is secured a pad of absorbent material. This pad, as shown, includes the core or roll D and the body or wrapper E, both made of absorbent material--such, for instance, as felt, cloth, canvas, cotton goods, or other suitable fabric or absorbent material-which may be manipulated to secure the construction of pad as shown in the different views.
The core D is a roll of fabric of a diameter substantially equal to that of the handle B, and it is fitted upon the end of the handle, as shown in Fig. 3. a
The wrapper E has a fold E turned infrom its upper end and of a width approximately one-third the width of the wrapper-sheet, so the wrapper when folded to the position shown in Fig. 2 will be doubled at its upper portion, its lower portion 6 being of single thickness, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In forming the pad upon the broom-handle the roll D is placed is then wound upon the roll and shank and upon itself into the form shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and it may be secured by the external row of stitches e and by the wire 0, or by either of said instrumentalities, if desired. It is preferred, however, to stitch the free end of the wrapper at e and also to wrap the lower portion of the wrapper with the wire C, as thereby I secure the desired form of handle with the knob or enlargement at its outer end, forming a desirable handhold and also aifording ample rubbing-surface for use in removing spots and the like from garments. It will be noticed the central roll D forms a suitable center for the pad, while the doubling of the upper portion of the wrapper E gives the desired enlarged form to the upper end of the pad and produces the knob-like effect desired.
In use the pad may be saturated with naphtha, gasolene, benzene, or other cleaning materials and then rubbed on grease or other spots to readily remove the same. For use in cleaning muddy garments the pad may be used dry. By combining the pad with the broom I provide a convenient form of handle for the broom and also furnish an article which may be conveniently used for cleansing garments, as before described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, isv l. The handle or shank provided with the central roll of a diameter equal to that of the shank and fitting upon the latter, and the wrapper folded upon itself at its outer edge and wound upon the roll and shank forming a handle-pad having a knob shape at its outer end substantially as set forth.
2. The combination in a broom with the handle of a Wrapper folded at its outer edge and wound upon and secured on the handle, the outer folded portionof the wrapper producing the knob-like form at the outer end of the pad substantially as set forth.
HARRY L. HARRIS.
