PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS MYERS, OFHARTFORD, CONNECTICUT,`ASSIGNOR TO UNDERWOOD TYPEWRITER COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
TYPE-BARv BASKET FOR TYPE-WRITERS.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 748,207, dated December 29, 1903.
Application iiled May I4, 1903.
T @ZZ whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, LOUIS MYERS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Bar Baskets for Type Writers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to type-writers and like ro machines, and has for its object to provide a type-bar basket which may be bodily removed from the machine and again inserted without any difficulty, so as to facilitate repairs and cleaning. The invention will be fully described here inafter and the features of' novelty pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a sectional elevation of a portion of a type-writer provided with my improvement, taken on line l l of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the type-bar basket and the frame portion which receives the same. z5 Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 illustrate the connection of the two sections of the type bar action, which are connected with the basket and with the frame, respectively, Fig.
o 3 and Fig. 5 a plan thereof, While Fig. 6 shows the blank from which the operating-lever, which remains connected with the frame, is formed.
For the sake of clearness only one type-bar with its connections has been shown in the drawings.
The frame of the carriage is provided with parallel members A A', extending from front to rear and adapted to support the type-bar basket. This basket is provided with a segmental front member B, which carries a cush ion B', and the upper ends B2 of which extend over and rest upon thefront ends of the frame members A A'. The basket is further provided with side bars C, which extend adjacent to the frame members A A', so as to hold the basket against lateral motion. At
its rear end the basket is provided with a 4 being a front elevation of the connection Serial No. 157,056. (No model.)
type-bar support D, provided with extensions D', which are received in recesses or pockets A2 of the frame. Thus the basket is held against forward or rearward movement, while a vertical movement of the basket is 'genen ally sufficiently prevented by its weight; but, vif desired, the extensions B2 of the basket may be screwed to the frame. The support D carries any suitable hangers or bearings of the type-bars E. I have indicated a hanger provided with space members F, between which the pivoted portion of the type-bar E is located, said hanger being secured to the support D by screws G.
The mechanism for operating the type-bars is carried partly by the frame and partly by the type-bar basket, and the connection bei tween the two parts of said mechanism is a detachable one.
In Fig. 1H indicates an operating-leverfulcrumed on the frame at H and adapted to be operated by any suitable key mechanism. The upper end of this operating-lever is U- shaped, as indicated at H2, and the cross member I-Iis provided with a vertical slot H4, open -at its upper end. This slot is adapted to receive the forward end of a link I, the rear end of which has a pivotal connection with the type-bar E, as indicated at E. Projections I are arranged on the link I infront and in,`
rear, respectively, of the cross member H3. Thus the operating-lever H and the link I are normally connected with each other; yet since the slot H4 is open at its upper end the connection of the link I with the lever H will be broken when the basket is lifted off the frame. In order to guide the links I and to keep them in proper position to be engaged with the levers H when the basket is again inserted in the machine, I provide the basket with a support J in the nature of a segment secured to the side bars C and provided with apertures or slots J', through which the links I extend. In Fig. 3 I have shown only a few of these slots J; but it will be understood that there are as many of them as there are type-bars. This link-support is located in advance of the type-bar support D.
It will be seen that by the use of my invention the entire basket, with all the type-bars and the links I, may be promptly removed from the machine and that When the basket is again putin its old position the links will automatically be engaged with the corresponding operating-levers H.
Various modifications may be made Without departing from the nature oi' my invention.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a type-writer, a frame having parallel supporting members provided With pockets, and a type-bar basket having parallel side members arranged along the inner surfaces of said supporting members and provided with projections extending into said pockets, to removably support the type-bar basket on the frame..
2. In a type-Writer, a frame having parallel supporting members and a type-bar basket having side members engaging the inner snrfaces of said supporting members, and extensions, Which rest on said supporting members so as to carry the type-bar basket on the frame.
3. In a type-Writer, a frame, a basket removable therefrom, type-bars pivotally supported on the basket, links connected with the type-bars, and a support on the basket permanently engaging said links to hold them in proper position for engagement by said operating mechanism, and operating mechanism carried by the frame and engaging said links.
4. In a type-Writer, a frame, a basket removable therefrom, type-bars pivoted on said basket, links connected with said type-bars, a supporting-guide for said links, carried by the basket, an operating mechanism carried by the frame, and detachably connected with said links.
5. In a type-Writer a frame, an operatinglever carried thereby, and provided with a slot open at its upper end, a type-bar basket removable from the frame, a type-bar pivoted tosaid basket, a link connected with said type-bar, and extending into the slot of the operating-lever, and a support for the said link, carried by the basket.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
LOUIS MYERS.
