.Application filed April 9, 1903. Serial No. 151,781. (No model .To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BEVERLY POWELL HERNDON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Florence, county of Pinal, and Territory of Arizona, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Safety-Pins, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to safety-pins, and has for its object means whereby the points are concealed from view and the liability of the hand coming in contact with the points, and thus tearing the flesh, is obviated.
A further object is the provision of means on the pin for temporarily locking the points within the body.
With these objects in view my invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, which will be more fully described hereinafter and'pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings,Figure lis a rear plan View. Fig. 2 is a front view showing the device as it would look when attached to a garment. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line fr of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line y y of Fig. 3.
Referring more especially to the drawings, l designates the body or covering for the pin and might be made ornamental and used for a brooch. At each end of the body l is a raised portion 2, separated by the V-shaped middle portion 3. Journaled in the V-shaped portion 3 by means of the rivets 4 and lying in the raised portion 2 is the pin 5, which is made of a single piece of wire bent back on itself at one end, so as to form the spiral corkscrew portion 6. In bending this end around into spiral form the first bend forms a cam operating in conjunction with the rivet 4, which holds the pin in locked position. This end is also supplied with a knob orhandle '7,which extends outside of the body to rotate the pin. At the opposite end from the portion 6 and seated on one of the raised portions 2 the pin is bent into corkscrew shape, as at 8, which is similar to 6, and serves to penetrate and grasp the garment when the knob 7 is rotated.
At a suitable distance from the portion 6 5o on the body ofthe pin is an enlargement 9,
forming a shoulder which abuts one of the rivets 4. Abutting the opposite side of the rivet is an annular collar 10, which is secured to the pin by soldering. These two effectually prevent the pin from moving longitudinally, but permit a rotary movement.
In operation the pin is placed against the garment in the position shown in Fig. 3 and the knob rotated until the pin penetrates the garment and assumes the position shown in Fig. ft, or it may be further rotated to more :firmly grasp the garment and so that the pin 8 would pierce the goods asecond time. The pin in the position shown in FigA: is held firmly by the cam and cannot be rotated or become nnfastened except when the knob is operated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A safety-pin comprising a body and a pin having two corkscrew-points working` within said body.
2. A safety-pin comprising a body andra pin working within said body and having two integral corkscrew-points. y
3. A safety-pin comprising a body having two raised portions, a rod having a corkscrewpin on one end and bent back upon itself at the opposite end to form a similar pin, and means for operating said pins within said raised portions.
4. In a safety-pin, the combination with a body having raised portions at its ends andI a V-shaped middle portion separating said raised portions, of a pin journaled within said body and having corkscrew ends, means to operate said pin, and means whereby said pin is held in locked position.
5. In a safety-pin, the combination with a body having raised portions at its ends, a V- shaped middle portion separating said raised portions, of a pin jourualed within said body, a knob secured to one end of said pin for operatiug same, means for preventing longitudinal movement of said pin, and means for locking the points of said pin within the body.
6. In a safety-pin, the combination with a body having raised portions at its ends and a V-shaped middle portion separating said raised portions, of a pin journaled within said body having corkscrew-shaped ends seated within said raised portions, a shoulder and ICO collar on the body portion of said pin for prewhich eoperates with said rivet to lock said venting longitudinal movement, a knob for pin, and means for turning said pin.
