To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IVAR H. P. COLLEEN, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy-Holders for Carriages of Type-\Vriters, 850.7; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being" bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in copy-holders which are especially adapted for attachment to the crossbar of a type-writer or mnsical'instrument; and it consists in the provision of a rack having clamping-jaws forattachment to the crossbar of the type-writer and the provision of a pivoted jaw adapted to hold the copy against the rack, suitable means being provided to hold the leaves of the copy fiat and at a convenient angle to a vertical position, so that the copy may be read without the necessity of the operator turning his or her head.

The invention will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims, and is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form part of this application, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved copy-holder shown as attached to the crossbar of a type-writer. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the copy-holder. Fig. 3 is a modified form showing the copy-holder as applied to a cornet. Fig. 4: is a rear view ofa portion of the copyholder.

The lower portion of this bar is slightly curved, as shown, and has an integral jaw G which is apertured, the walls of said apertures being threaded to recoiizethe threaded Fig. 5 is an edge view of the copy-holding plate, showing the serrations d. Reference now being bad to. the details of ends of the thumb-screw C The complemental jaw C, which is separate from the fixed jaw, is apex-lured for the threaded shank portions of said thumb-screws to pass through. Said thumb-screws are adapted to engage said threaded apertures in the jaw C and these thumb-screws have shoulders which are designed to contact with the outer face of said complemental jaw C as the screws are turned in, whereby the jaws O and C may be held in frictional contact with the barof the typewriter to securely hold the rack either in an upright or inclined position, accordingly as may be desired. Said supporting-bar O has laterally'projecting rods or strips of metal D fon one side thereof, and a plate .D is fastened to said bar in any suitable manner. One edge of said plate is recessed, as at D, and said rods D are bent at D up through said recesses and extend in a plane parallel to the plane of said plate, except that the upper longitudinal edge of each rod D extends slightly above the plane of said plate to pre vent a copy coming in contact with edge of the plate as it is slid in on the rods D toward the clamping edge of .the clip-catch. Integral with said bar C or plate D are the bracketarms D and intermediate said bracket-arms is a handle D A rod D is mounted in apertures in said arms, and a clip-catch D has arms secured to the ends of said rod. A coiled spring D is mounted upon the rod D and has a loop D bearing against a handle D integral with the catch D, the ends of the spring bearing against a rod D supported by the arms D. In Fig. 3 of the drawings 1 have shown a slightly-modified form of my copy-holder, in which the shank portion F is held in a socket F of a, cornet by means of an adjusting screw F In the modified form I have shown a. plate as having the usual clip-catch E and a handle E and instead of two rods projecting from the jaw l the clip-calicli I provide one rod E and a single red it, projecting from the plate D and cooperating with the rod E to hold the copy in place. At the edges of the plate D are two curved lingers E, which are ,provided to prevent it copy coming in Contact with the edge of the plate when adjusted in place upon the copy-holder.

From the foregoing it will he observed that by the provision of :t copy-holder embodying tlieconstruction illustrated in the drawings shock or other copy-may be held directly in front of the operator and not necessitating the turning of the head of the operator, as is commonly the case with holders which are it will be observed that this copy-holder (shown in Fig. 1) maybe readily attached to the crossbar of various makes of typo-Writers and is adopted to move with the carriage of it type- Writer machine.
