PATE T OFFICE.
GEORGE M. BURNETT, OF OONEY ISLAND, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF-ONE- HALF TO JOHN IMRIE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
VEG ETABLE-CUTTER.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,933, dated December 29, 1903- Application filed April 6 1901. Renewed May 15, 1903 fierial lilo. 157,324. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, GEORGE M. BURNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Goney Island, in the county of Kings and State of 5 New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vegetable-Cutters,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vegetable-cutters; and it has for its object to provide an imro proved device of this character which will possess the advantages of simplicity of construction and rapidityand efficiencyin operation.
The construction of the improvement will 15 be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and its novel and characteristic features will be defined in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is aview in perspective of a machine embodying the invention. and Fig. 3isa longitudinal section of the revoluble cutter employed in the machine. 25 Corresponding part-s in all the figures are denoted by the same reference characters.
The frame of the machine comprises parallel standards 2, resting on the base-boards 1 and connected by a cross-bar 16 near their lower ends and by a cross-piece 24 at their upper ends.
3 designates a hollow cylindrical cutter slitted at diametrically opposite sides to provide inclined cutters 10 and openings 11 5 Between the cutters the cylinder 3 is formed with struck-up cutters 9, preferably arranged in parallel rows, the cutters of one row alternating With those of the adjacent row. The cylinder 3 is mounted upon a shaft o 14, supported in bearings 19, formed by recessing the standards 2, and upon one end of said shaft is acrank-handle 17 for revolving the shaft and cylinder. One end of the cylinder is closed by a head 7', having a central 5 opening for the passage of the shaft, and the other open end 8 of the cylinder is supported upon a spider 7 which is also provided witha central opening for the shaft 14.
Secured to the loweredge of the cross-piece 5o 24 is a fixed cutter comprising a blade 26, projected outward into position to coact with the cutters of the cylinder.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same,-
The shaft 14 is adapted to be locked against movement by means of a pawl 20, pivotally secured at 22 to the adjacent standard 2. 1
5 designates a hopper of peculiar construction, which constitutes an important feature of the invention and comprises a box of rectangular form open at both top and bottom and provided with hooks 30, by means of which it is suspended from the upper edge of the cross-piece 24. The front wall of the box'or hopper 5 is formed with a central vert-ical slot 29, extending throughout the height of the box to afford access for an implement 5 or the hand of the operator to assist in feeding the contents of the box or hopper to the cutters.
In the operation of the machine the vegetables pass through the hopper 5 to the cutters and may be forced downward in case of clogging by the insertion of the hand or a suitable implement through the slot in the hopper. The vegetables are first operated upon by the knives 9, which in cooperation with the fixed cutter 26 cutthem into strips or blocks, which are then severed by the cutter l0 and drop through the openings 11 into the cylinder 3, from which they may be removed through the open end 8 of the cylinder.
It will be obvious that the revolution of the cylinder and its cuttersis effected through the medium of the shaft 14 and its crankhandle and that the box shaped hopper guidesthe vegetable to the knives and affords means for insuring a steady feed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Avegetable-cutter comprising'supportingstandards, a cross-piece connecting the upper ends of the standards, a fixed cutter projecting from the lower edge of the cross-piece, a cylindrical cutter revolubly supported below the fixed cutter, and a box or hopper sus- 5 pended from the cross-piece, and having a central vertical opening extending throughout the height of the hopper.
In witness whereof I have signed my name. in the presence of the subscribing Witnesses. lOO
GEORGE M. BURNETT.
