Be'it known that I, LEVI' H. WHITNEY, of Yallejo, county of Selene, in the State of California, have invented afnw und improved Device or Mode of Constructing a Fire-Lighter; and I do hereby declare that the following is e. full'andexact description thereof, referenee'being ,had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature ofmy invention consists, first, in the mode of containing the oil and supplying it, to the wicksocket; s econd, the wick-socket, which contains 'the wick, is screwed on the tube, .containing theoil,l and the combination of the tube and'wick-socket forms a device or torch i'or igniting wood, charcoal, orother material for kindling tires iri all kinds of stoves, fireplaces, or any place where itis necessary to kindl-e a tire; third, the wick, made of any compacted material suitable for wicks' to burn coalor otherV oils, and forced into the wick-sockettight and close; fourth, thelpacking inside the tube to'retard the too great ilow'of, oil to the wicksocket.Y A 4 To enableothers skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction;
Figure Il is elperspective view.
Figure 2 nre` thetube and wick-socket m4 operation.
Figure 3 shows another mode of .constructingthc wick-socket..
Figures 4 and 5 represent modifications in the form of nozzle or wick-tube. i
To construct the tire-lighter, take com mon brass or iron tubing of any desirable diameter and length, the most convenient and suitable-sized tubing being three-fourths of an inch inside and seven-eighths (Hof an finch outside diameter, and eighteen (18) inches. long. Cut screw-threads on oneend and close the opposite end.
The wick-socket maybe cast, of' brass or iron, with inside diameter somewhat smaller than that olthstube, and with a tape'r, enditap the larger end and screw on the tube, inserting aA gasket offsoft motel, rubber, or leather to make a close joint. The wick is made of cotton-rope or other and cheaper material suitable for the purpose, and two to four (2 to 4) inches long, and woundV with thread. to compress and make it solid: VThe packing A in tube may be made of thick felt-cloth, cut in suitable size telit the chamber of tube, and -sscure'd together with a wire to facilitate adjusting and removing itto lill the tube withoil.
Its use: Fill the tube with coal-oil, light the wick, place it under the grate of 's coal-stove,`or in the refbox4 yof a wood-stove, and place over the blaze some'small lWood and immediately it becomes ignited, when the iir`e- 'lighter is removed and extinguished.,
What I claim as my invention, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is As an article of manufacture, a. fire-lighter, constructed of the parts arranged substantially as described.
LEVI H. WHITNEY.
